PROJECT MANAGER – INDUSTRIAL CONSTRUCTION (STEEL / PEMB)

British Columbia / Alberta

NextStep Recruitment is working with a growing general contractor to hire for this role.

They deliver industrial projects across Western Canada — primarily steel buildings, tilt-up, and facilities tied to manufacturing and logistics operations. The work is hands-on and detail-driven, with a strong focus on execution.

The Role

They’re looking for a Project Manager who is comfortable owning projects from pre-construction through closeout.

You’ll be responsible for budget, schedule, subcontractors, and client coordination. You’ll also be working closely with estimating and site teams to keep projects aligned as they move.

This is not a heavily layered environment. You’re expected to stay close to the work and deal with issues directly.

What this typically involves

  • Managing multiple industrial projects in the $5M–$30M+ range
  • Coordinating steel and PEMB scopes from procurement through erection
  • Reviewing drawings and identifying gaps early
  • Working directly with trades, suppliers, and consultants
  • Keeping schedules and budgets aligned with actual progress
  • Leading client communication and project updates

What they’re looking for

  • Experience as a Project Manager with a General Contractor / Prime Contractor
  • Background in industrial or heavy industrial construction
  • Direct experience managing structural steel or PEMB scopes
  • Strong understanding of drawings, specifications, and shop drawings
  • Comfortable working independently and making decisions without a lot of structure around you

Where this tends to be a strong fit

  • You’ve owned projects end-to-end and are accountable for outcomes
  • You’re comfortable staying close to the details, not just managing at a distance
  • You’re used to coordinating multiple trades and stakeholders directly

Where it tends not to fit as well

  • Experience is primarily with subcontractors rather than a GC / Prime Contractor
  • Roles have been more support-based vs full ownership
  • Preference for highly structured environments with multiple layers of approval
