What We're Looking For

HNTB is seeking a dynamic and entrepreneurial traffic engineering leader who is eager to help build a growing team across Northern New England while leading impactful transportation projects throughout the region. In the near term, you'll lead a diverse portfolio of traffic engineering projects from our South Portland, ME, or Bedford, NH, offices. Working with clients such as MaineDOT, NHDOT, VTrans, and HNTB's oldest client, the Maine Turnpike Authority, you'll help deliver a wide range of services, from planning and traffic studies to traffic signal and ITS engineering, microsimulation, and real-time operational strategies.

In this role, you'll manage projects through their full lifecycle, from shaping proposals and negotiating contracts to delivering on HNTB's 4-for-4 performance promise: quality work, on time, on budget, and to the client's satisfaction. You'll collaborate with internal and external partners, solve complex transportation challenges, and ensure successful outcomes on projects that make a lasting impact. This role places you at the forefront of innovation, helping guide teams and clients toward smarter, safer, and more connected mobility solutions.

Beyond project delivery, you'll also play a key role in strengthening client relationships, recruiting and developing talent, expanding our market presence, and helping define the future of traffic engineering services across Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. As part of a nationally recognized transportation practice, you'll collaborate with regional and national leaders to deliver innovative solutions while helping grow HNTB's presence throughout Northern New England. What You'll Do:

• Responsible for development of the project scope and fee quotation and assists in the preparation of technical proposals and contracts in accordance with HNTB's Sophisticated Contracting Approach (SCA).
• Serves as the primary client liaison and manages the project team to deliver the scope, schedule, and budgets to completion and to the client’s satisfaction. Assists with client project scoping and contract negotiations.
• Performs technical discipline tasks including analysis, reports, design, specification, and production for assigned projects.
• Implements the firm’s project delivery plan using HNTB's Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SDA) on each project. Leads the development and the execution of the project management plan. Supervises and mentors team to overall project objectives.
• Performs coordination with managers on project staffing, including, but not limited to; recruitment, development, retention, and succession of project staff; development of plan for project staff reporting; and support for performance and compensation reviews.
• Partners with Client Service Leaders and pursuit champions to assist with business development, building client relationships, and pursuit efforts for strategic and mini-mega projects in accordance with HNTB's Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA). Works with the project team and marketing resources to prepare appropriate proposal and presentation materials. Leads proposal development and interview presentations for strategic and mini-mega projects to the client as well as general presentations within the industry and community.
• May be responsible for the recruitment, hiring, development, and retention of staff, including development of plan for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 8 years of relevant experience
• 2 years task management or Deputy PM experience

What We Prefer

• Experience managing transportation projects from planning through delivery.
• Knowledge of traffic engineering and planning principles, including signal design, ITS, and traffic modeling.
• Familiarity with project management tools and processes to monitor budgets, schedules, and deliverables.
• A proven ability to lead and inspire collaboration across disciplines.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license and PTOE is a plus—but what matters most is your drive to lead and deliver.What You'll Bring:
• Winning, contracting, and successfully delivering 4for4 (on-time, on-budget, quality, client satisfaction) on smaller projects. Identifying and escalating risk and change management issues, with oversight from more experienced staff.
• Leading a team for a smaller project or task order with no or few subconsultants.
• Using system tools to manage, monitor, and deliver smaller projects or task orders.
• Leveraging the Office Management Team to assist in implementing HNTB Sophisticated processes as applicable to the project.
• Interfacing with your client-level peer on a smaller project or task order.
• Providing technical guidance to team and task leads as well as performing portions of the technical work.​

The approximate pay range for Vermont is $126,950.84 - $198,564.14. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position based on all selected locations within the state at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.

The approximate pay range for Maine is $126,950.84 - $198,564.14. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position based on all selected locations within the state at the time of posting.
