The purpose of the Federal Facility Remediation & Restoration Unit is to oversee the federal agencies (primarily
Department of Defense (DoD)) cleanup of environmental contamination located in Colorado. The Unit works with
federal agencies, state and local governments, businesses, and the general public to ensure that federal facility
cleanups or remedial actions are conducted in a manner which is protective of human health and the environment
and are consistent with state and federal law. The Unit oversees the remediation and closure of regulated waste
management units at numerous active sites, formerly used defense sites, or base realignment and closure sites.
Remediation is necessary due to contamination of environmental media from the improper management of
hazardous waste or hazardous substances and are usually conducted pursuant to RCRA or CERCLA. The Unit
provides technical assistance and approval regarding proper management of hazardous waste, characterization of
contaminated sites, and remediation of soil, surface water and groundwater. The Unit seeks and fosters public
involvement in selecting and carrying out actions, which are technically sound, cost effective, and timely. The
Unit works with stakeholders to ensure community involvement and institutes best practices in these efforts.
The position exists to represent the state’s interests by ensuring federal facilities comply with federal and state law
under CERCLA and RCRA. The position provides technical support and oversight of remediation activities at federal
facilities, verifying that the work aligns with the approved design specifications, work plans, and decision documents.
This position ensures that remedial actions are technically sound, cost-effective, satisfy all legal and regulatory
requirements, and are performed in a timely manner. To make these determinations, the position requires regulatory
expertise regarding the characterization and remediation of soil, surface water, and groundwater. In some cases, the
position may require regulatory expertise (or the willingness to learn) regarding the characterization and treatment of
per and polyfluoroalkyl substances and other emerging contaminants.
This posting is only open to residents of the State of Colorado at the time of submitting your application.
