Job Description

Downer is seeking an experienced Project Manager based in either Townsville or Mackay who will be responsible for the end-to-end delivery of multiple asphalt and spray seal projects, managing time, cost, quality, safety and stakeholder expectations across North Queensland. This role plays a key part in driving Downer’s Zero Harm culture and strengthening relationships with clients, suppliers and government partners. Flexibility with travel is a must!

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead day‑to‑day depot operations to ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to quality standards.
  • Develop and manage annual budgets, forecasting and financial reporting.
  • Plan and coordinate labour, plant, and materials effectively across projects.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, suppliers, subcontractors, and government stakeholders.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and direction to supervisors and operational teams.
  • Drive operational excellence, continuous improvement, and efficiency initiatives.
  • Contribute to organisational planning, strategy, and market growth objectives.
  • Champion a Zero Harm culture, ensuring compliance with WHS legislation and fatigue management requirements.

ABOUT YOU

  • Degree in Civil Engineering (preferred) or Diploma of Civil Construction / Business, or equivalent proven experience.
  • Approximately 10 years’ experience in asphalt or bituminous surfacing, with senior management exposure.
  • Proven experience managing large operational teams and complex civil construction projects.
  • Strong financial management skills, including budgeting, forecasting, and performance reporting.
  • Sound knowledge of WHS, quality, and environmental management systems.
  • Experience working with State and Local Government contracts.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Flexible with travel when required.
