Job Description

Position: Project Environment Manager (full-time, permanent)
Location: North Central USA
Rotation: 3 weeks on, 1 week off
Schedule: 6 days on, 1 day off

Reporting to the Director of Environment, the Project Environmental Manager serves as a senior environmental authority and is responsible for implementing the environmental management program for a transmission line construction project located in the North Central Region of the United States. This role provides leadership and oversight to internal project teams and ensures environmental requirements are fully integrated into project planning, execution, and closeout.

The Project Environmental Manager works closely with Manager management, construction management, and Project Environmental Specialists to proactively manage environmental risks, ensure compliance with project specifications, and support the successful delivery of the project.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead the implementation and oversight of project-specific environmental management programs in accordance with regulatory approvals, permits, client requirements, and corporate environmental standards
  • Serve as the senior internal environmental authority on assigned projects, providing technical oversight to environmental staff and project teams
  • Mentor and lead field Environmental Specialists, including planning, scheduling, and technical support
  • Ensure project and client environmental requirements are integrated into project planning, construction work execution, and scheduling
  • Interpret and apply environmental approvals, permits, and commitments and translate them into clear, actionable requirements for construction (internal and subcontractor) project teams
  • Proactively identify environmental risks and constraints, develop mitigation strategies to balance environmental protection with construction work execution, planning, and scheduling
  • Lead the investigation of environmental incidents, including spill response coordination, investigation, reporting, and corrective action implementation
  • Prepare and review environmental plans as necessary to support and meet project and client obligations
  • Act as the primary point of contact for project environmental matters with clients and other stakeholders as required
  • Initiate and support pre- and post-construction activities, including assessments, to assist with reclamation planning and implementation
  • Perform other duties as required in support of project and corporate objectives

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in environmental science, physical or biological science, or a closely related field
  • Knowledge of regulations and industry best practices in environment and sustainable development, and a demonstrated history of successfully implementing and communicating them to stakeholders
  • Minimum of 8-10 years dedicated full-time experience leading a team of environmental practitioners in an industrial work setting (preference given to electrical utility and construction experience)
  • Experience developing, coordinating, and managing projects with a wide variety of client and regulatory stakeholders
  • Experience interfacing with U.S. federal, state, and local environmental regulators/agencies is considered an asset

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of environmental legislation, permitting requirements, and environmental management systems applicable to linear infrastructure construction projects
  • Proven leadership and supervisory skills, with the ability to direct and mentor project environmental field staff and build internal and external relationships by working effectively in and contributing to a diverse team environment
  • Demonstrated experience working directly with construction supervision in active work fronts, including authority to stop or redirect work when required
  • Strong project management capabilities, including planning, prioritization, and coordination of environmental activities to align with construction schedules and milestones
  • Ability to proactively identify environmental risks and constraints and implement practical, construction-focused mitigation strategies
  • Extensive experience managing environmental compliance in an active construction environment, including erosion and sedimentation control/SWPPP, spill prevention and response, access management, wildlife management, and reclamation/restoration
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interface effectively with project management, construction leadership, clients, and other stakeholders
  • Ability to prepare and review environmental management plans and procedures to a high professional standard
  • Strong proficiency with common software tools and applications including Microsoft Office Suite (SharePoint, Word, Excel, Outlook) and Adobe
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining accountability for project and corporate objectives

ADDITIONAL DETAILS
This position requires candidates to:

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States or able to obtain and maintain U.S. work authorization
  • Successfully complete pre-employment and site-specific drug and alcohol testing
  • Maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record 
  • Complete background screening and criminal record checks as required
  • This is a site-based role operating on a rotational schedule. The anticipated rotation is three (3) weeks on / one (1) week off, working six (6) days on and one (1) day off (Sundays), with ten (10) hour workdays. Rotation and schedule are subject to project needs and construction sequencing, and flexibility to adjust during critical phases is required.
