JOB SUMMARY

The Project Engineer (PE) provides project-delivery support to Project Managers and Construction Managers on capital improvement projects for Stanford Medicine Children’s Health under the general supervision of the Director of Design, Director of Construction, or Program Manager. The PE supports project controls, coordination, documentation, financial tracking, schedule support, risk and issue tracking, and closeout. Project Engineers may be assigned responsibility and ownership for specific tasks or defined portions of a project,

with task ownership increasing with demonstrated capability.

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the hospital's policies and procedures, including its Service Standards and its Code of Conduct.

Provide project controls, documentation, coordination, and analysis in support of PMs and CMs.

Supports projects of varying size and complexity under an assigned PM or CM; task ownership increases with demonstrated capability.

• Assists with procurement documentation, bid analysis, contract exhibits, and vendor performance tracking.
• Documents lessons learned and proposes updates to Hospital Standards through the assigned PM.
• Supports project managers and project team with creating, tracking, and updating design and construction schedules.
• Collaborates with project teams in developing detailed project plans/designs including preparing cost estimates and budgets.
• Meets regularly with project team to stay abreast of and track the status of design and construction projects at all stages.
• Prepares meeting agendas, meeting materials, and notes as needed. Records and distributes minutes summarizing matters discussed decisions made, and follow up action items. Track action items to resolution.
• Reviews project documentation for completeness and consistency; coordinates corrections with the document owner and escalates material discrepancies.
• Supports document control, including distribution, revisions, field changes, and approvals.
• Ensures project records are complete, accurate, current, auditable, maintained, and archive properly in accordance with department standards.
• Identifies and recommends improvements to project-delivery processes, tools, templates, and standards.
• Supports implementing quality control measures and project compliance.
• Identifies project barriers, resolves complex technical problems, and recommends standards to mitigate project risk and improve delivery outcomes.
• Maintains effective and on-going communications with construction and contractor management teams
• Supports the selection process and contract negotiations for consultants, contractors, and vendors.
• Provides initial review of pay applications, change orders, and other incoming construction documents.
• Maintains cost records, supports forecasts and reconciliations, and prepares financial reports for PM/CM review.
• Maintains the project risk and issue logs, tracks mitigation actions, and escalates overdue or high-impact items.
• Supports financial and administrative closeout in accordance with department soft-close and hard-close procedures.
• Support the Change Order Process in the construction project management system, including review of pricing, scope validation, cost backup evaluation, and coordination of negotiations, with recommendations for review by the Project Manager or Construction Manager.
• Support coordination of approved changes.
• May provide occasional weekend coverage for projects in construction.
• Assist the Construction Manager with routine site walks and field inspections to monitor construction progress, quality, and work-in-place;document observations with photos and daily field reports; escalate safety, infection prevention, quality, or scope issues that may result in cost or schedule impacts to construction projects.
• Supports maintaining regulatory documentation and tracking required submissions, inspections, and closeout items.
• Support CM to manage project construction logistics, including vendor badging, parking, deliveries, laydown spaces, contractor safety orientations, and ICRA/PCRA /ILSM compliance.
• Support CM to plan and communicate construction - related operational impacts (shutdowns, access changes, infection control barriers) with other stakeholder departments, including Strategic Space Planning, Facilities, Environmental Health & Safety, Infection Prevention & Control, ensuring impacts are documented and coordinated to avoid cost or schedule disruption.
• Assist with post-construction activities.
• Tracks closeout deliverables, maintains the closeout log, compiles record documents, and escalates late or incomplete items.
• Maintain awareness of project safety requirements and promptly communicate observed safety concerns in accordance with established procedures, recognizing that responsibility for construction means and methods, site safety, and regulatory compliance remains with the General Contractor.
• Performs other project engineering and project management-related duties as well as incidental duties as needed or assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education: Bachelor's degree in a work-related discipline/field from an accredited college or university. Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management preferred

Experience: Three (3) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience. Healthcare construction experience, or experience delivering complex projects in occupied environments, is preferred.

Licensure/Certification: None Required. PMP or Construction Management Degree or Certificate Preferred.

KNOWLEDGE

These are the observable and measurable attributes and skills required to perform successfully the essential functions of the job and are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education or licensure/certification.

• Knowledge of and ability to use project management tools.
• Knowledge of CAD system, CAFM, estimating, cost control, scheduling, construction administration, quality control, and specific writing and place planning.
• Knowledge of project management, accounting, construction design, construction methods, building materials, sustainability, mechanical and electrical construction, cost estimation, building codes and standards, and contract administration.
• Knowledge of technical and professional requirements in the fields of healthcare delivery, architecture, and the building design process, and construction.
• Knowledge of OSHPD forms, applications, fees, permits, test, and inspection forms.
• Knowledge of RFI, PCO, submittal, and invoicing processes
• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite business software application
• Ability to organize and complete project documentation.
• Ability to read drawings and schematics.
• Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and complete work within deadlines ensuring accuracy and attention to detail at each step.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with and gain the cooperation of others at all levels, both within and outside SHC.

Pay Range

Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role.

Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Typically, new team members join at the minimum to mid salary range.

Minimum to Midpoint Range (Hourly): $50.42 to $65.55
