Job Description

Project Engineer Department Operations / Preconstruction Reports To Project Manager / Operations Vice President Location Lombard, IL (with project site travel) FLSA Status Exempt, Full-Time Travel Periodic; temporary site assignment possible Date June 2026

We deliver complex construction with agility, quality, and extreme customer service — and the Project Engineer is central to making that happen. In this role, you connect the drawings to the field: performing quantity takeoffs, assembling buyout and procurement packages, and serving as a responsive technical resource for our on-site teams throughout the construction period. This is a hands-on engineering position focused on practical project execution rather than engineering of record; the Project Engineer does not stamp or seal drawings, and a Professional Engineer (PE) license is not required, though licensure or progress toward it is a plus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Quantity Takeoffs — Perform detailed quantity takeoffs from architectural, structural, civil, and MEP drawings and specifications to support estimating, buyout, and procurement activities.
  • Buyout & Procurement Packages — Develop complete buyout and procurement packages for subcontracted and direct-purchase scopes, including scopes of work, bills of materials, drawing and specification references, schedule requirements, and commercial terms for review by the Project Manager.
  • Bid Leveling & Vendor Coordination — Solicit, receive, and level subcontractor and vendor proposals; prepare bid comparisons and recommendations; identify scope gaps, exclusions, and long-lead items that affect cost or schedule.
  • Field Support & Liaison — Serve as a primary point of contact for the on-site team during construction; research and help resolve field questions related to drawings, specifications, materials, and procured scopes in a timely manner.
  • RFIs & Submittals — Assist with requests for information (RFIs), submittals, and material approvals; track responses and communicate impacts to procurement and delivery schedules.
  • Procurement Tracking — Track procurement status, delivery dates, and material logistics against the project schedule; flag risks early and propose solutions.
  • Document Control — Maintain organized, current project records, including takeoff backup, buyout logs, vendor correspondence, and procurement documentation.
  • Site Visits & Assignments — Visit project sites as needed to verify conditions, support the field team, and review installed work against procured scopes; accept temporary assignment to a project site when required by project needs.
  • Process & Values — Support continuous improvement of our takeoff, buyout, and procurement procedures, and uphold our commitment to safety, integrity, and extreme customer service in every interaction.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or Construction Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field — or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in construction engineering, estimating, procurement, or project engineering (internship and co-op experience considered for entry-level candidates).
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications across multiple disciplines.
  • Proficiency with takeoff and construction management software (e.g., Bluebeam Revu, On-Screen Takeoff, Procore, or similar) and strong Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple buyout packages and deadlines at once.
  • Clear, professional written and verbal communication; comfortable coordinating with subcontractors, vendors, and field personnel.
  • Ability to travel periodically to project sites and, when needed, accept a temporary site-based assignment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer in Training (EIT/FE) certification — a plus but not required; this position does not perform engineering of record and does not stamp or seal drawings.
  • Experience supporting government, institutional, or international construction projects.
  • Familiarity with scheduling software (e.g., Primavera P6, Microsoft Project) and cost databases.
  • OSHA 10/30 certification.

Working Conditions

This position is based in our home office with regular computer-based work. Periodic travel to active construction sites is expected, where the Project Engineer must follow all site safety requirements, wear required personal protective equipment, and navigate typical jobsite conditions (uneven terrain, ladders, weather exposure). At times, the role may be temporarily assigned to a project site based on project needs.

Our Values

We hold ourselves to high standards in everything we deliver. Every member of our team is expected to embody our core values: integrity, teamwork, respect, discipline, accountability, and social responsibility.

Equal Opportunity

We are an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status.
This position description summarizes the general nature and level of work performed. It is not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required, and duties may change based on business and project needs.
