Job Description

Project Director

Department: Project Management

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Phoenix, AZ

Compensation: $175,000 - $195,000 / year

Description

The Project Director is responsible for the successful performance of multiple projects and project teams in the Phoenix market — leading project delivery, client relationships, business performance, and talent development across an active portfolio. This is a senior leadership role based in the field, working from the jobsite trailer and moving between meetings with clients, consultants, and project teams rather than a desk in a corporate office.

The Project Director develops future operational leaders, supports key pursuits and preconstruction efforts, and plays a central role in the long-term success of projects, clients, and the organization. This role reports to the Project Executive, Vice President of Operations, or other assigned supervisor, and works closely with clients, consultants, trade partners, project teams, and company leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and oversight across multiple projects to drive safety, quality, schedule, financial, and client satisfaction outcomes.
  • Support project teams in resolving complex project, operational, contractual, staffing, and risk-related challenges.
  • Monitor project performance and guide teams to improve outcomes, profitability, and client satisfaction.
  • Develop and maintain strategic client, consultant, and industry relationships; serve as a senior company representative on key accounts.
  • Mentor and develop Senior Project Managers, Project Managers, and other project team members; support recruiting, performance management, and succession planning.
  • Lead and guide major project pursuits and preconstruction activities, including execution planning, staffing strategy, procurement strategy, and risk assessment.
  • Evaluate project, staffing, and operational decisions through the lens of company profitability, risk, reputation, and long-term business objectives.
  • Represent the company within industry associations, professional organizations, and community

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • 15+ years of progressively responsible construction industry experience, with demonstrated success leading large or complex construction projects, project teams, and client relationships.
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Expert understanding of project delivery methods, construction operations, risk management, scheduling, procurement, contract administration, and project controls.
  • Advanced knowledge of construction means and methods, constructability principles, building systems, and VDC/BIM processes.
  • Strong business acumen, financial decision-making, and the ability to oversee multiple projects and competing priorities at once.
  • Exceptional relationship-building, negotiation, and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and credibility across clients, project teams, and company leadership.
  • Experience mentoring project management staff and supporting operational leadership initiatives.

Benefits

A genuine senior leadership role with real influence over project strategy, client relationships, and the people you develop — not just execution.

  • Lead a growing portfolio of work in one of the most active construction markets in the Southwest.
  • Direct line of sight into pursuits, preconstruction, and company-level decisions, not just project delivery.
  • 100% employee-owned (ESOP) company with a track record dating back to 1925 — your leadership has a direct stake in the outcome.
  • Full benefits package: competitive pay, bonus program, medical/dental/vision insurance, PTO/sick leave, life insurance, 401(k) with match, and a student debt assistance program.
  • W.E. O'Neil Construction is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
