The Project Accountant will work with the Finance Manager along with the accounting department on the Edmonton Valley Line West (EVLW) project. The position will be responsible for month end process, financial statement preparation, cross departmental coordination, quick analysis of general ledger accounts to identify areas requiring further review, along with various ad-hoc analysis and process implementation.

Main Responsibilities

• Work with Finance/Accounting team to provide superior support for construction operations.
• Provide management and oversight of the accounts payable department.
• Working with Project Controls, performing various cost reclasses.
• Generate monthly bank reconciliations.
• Review and analysis of monthly cost report.
• Perform GL account reviews and variance analysis to identify anomalies, trends, and areas needing deeper investigation; propose follow-up actions.
• Assist or drive monthly billing process to the client.
• Fixed asset recognition and entries.
• Work with the team on compiling the month end financial package and draft financial statements.
• Prepare accruals, reconciliations, and schedules to support month-end close and financial reporting.
• Support audit and financial review requests, compile documentation, and respond to auditor queries.
• Positively participate in company safety program and adhere to all safety requirements.
• Prepare journal entries.
• Provide recommendations for savings, efficiencies and improved communication.

Requirements

• CPA qualification: recently completed CPA designation (or in final stages), with a strong foundation in financial reporting and accounting standards.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
• Minimum 2 years’ experience working in accounting, preferably construction.
• JDE software experience – Preferred.
• Effective communication skills with individuals at all levels of the organization.
• Intermediate Excel user.
• Able to work well under pressure and meet set deadlines.
• Good organizational, time management, and prioritizing skills.
• Attention to detail in all areas of work.
• Good interpersonal skills for client / contractor relations.
• Costing and margin expertise: understanding of cost allocation methods, job costing, and margin analysis, with the ability to interpret drivers of profitability.
• Audit and review experience: exposure to audits or financial statement reviews; strong understanding of audit requirements, documentation standards, and key areas of auditor focus.
• Asset and inventory exposure: hands-on experience accounting for capital assets and/or inventory, including valuation, tracking, and related controls.
• Month-end and reporting discipline: proven track record preparing accruals, reconciliations, and monthly financial reporting, with attention to accuracy and deadlines.
• Public practice background (preferred): experience from public accounting, reviewing multiple financial statements across clients, and now seeking to transition into an industry role.
