Other requirements: You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You must be enrolled at a UK (United Kingdom) or ROI (Republic of Ireland) University for the duration of your placement.

Expected Start date: September 2027

Duration: 1 year (approximately)

Salary: A salary of £28,900 (London) plus a bonus.

Workplace Arrangements: Flexible working via performance with choice (office & home working may be available)

The Roles (3 available)

Role 1 – Biostatistics & Data Science - GSK HQ London

Degree requirements: Mathematics / Statistics / Data Sciences BSc

Overview of the Department

Respiratory, Immunology and Inflammation (RII) Biostatistics is part of the RII Research Unit (RIIRU), a department focused on developing innovative medicines for respiratory, immune and inflammatory diseases. RII statisticians play a key role throughout the research and development of the drug pipeline, working closely with scientists, clinicians in areas such as medicine discovery, clinical trial design and statistical analysis. We provide statistical expertise in the design of studies and clinical trials (e.g. sample size determination and randomisation strategies), as well as the performing analysis and providing interpretation of data.

Key Placement Activities

• Support professional statisticians in the design of studies and clinical trials (e.g. sample size determination and randomisation).
• Work with professional statisticians in preparing statistical analysis plans, model development, output QC, and the communication of results.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g. scientists, clinicians).
• Develop statistical programming skills in R and other software.
• Develop an understanding of statistical methods used throughout drug development.
• Learn and apply statistical methods through project work and internal training on advanced topics e.g. Quantitative Decision Making, Bayesian Dynamic Borrowing, Dose Response Modelling, etc.

Role 2 - Clinical Programming and Business Excellence - GSK HQ London

Degree requirements - Preferably Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a Science/Technology related discipline.

Overview of the Department

Clinical Programming play a critical role within the Biostatistics department. We support clinical research teams by performing programming and validation of datasets and outputs for the analysis and reporting of clinical trial data. Meanwhile ensuring data quality, accuracy and adherence to data standards and regulatory requirements. Clinical Programming collaborate closely with cross-functional teams such as Statistics, Data Management and Clinical teams to ensure data is fit for purpose and meets requirements for study analysis and reporting. This placement year will provide you with exposure to industry-standard tools, methodologies, and regulatory requirements while contributing to the advancement of life-changing therapies. You will gain an insight into cutting-edge clinical research and the development processes, with the opportunity to learn from and network with experienced professionals within GSK.

Key Placement Learnings

• Collaborate with statisticians and fellow professional programmers as part of a study team to develop datasets, tables, listings and figures to aid clinical trial reporting.
• Participate in programming activities for clinical trial reporting using SAS and/or R programming languages, whilst adhering to data standards and regulatory requirements.
• Conduct quality control checks on clinical trial data and outputs, identifying and resolving discrepancies or issues where possible and flagging data issues to necessary stakeholders.
• Assist in the preparation of standard documentation, including dataset specifications and reviewer guides.
• Opportunities to be involved in and contribute to other non-project initiatives within GSK, contributing towards development of the Biostatistics department.

Role 3 - Quantitative Sciences Innovation – GSK HQ London

Degree requirements - Mathematics, Statistics, Data Sciences

Overview of the Department

This is an exciting opportunity to join GSK and gain exposure for innovation in the field of Statistics and Data Science to help transform the way in which we use data and quantitative thinking to drive decision-making in R&D. We are growing our cutting-edge statistical innovation and data science capabilities by expanding the Quantitative Sciences Innovation (QSI) group led by Nicky Best. QSI is a methodologically focused, solution-oriented functional group within GSK’s Biostatistics department.

Key Placement Learnings

• Collaborate with your team to develop and explore novel methods for handling prediction problems
• Gain hands on coding experience developing Machine Learning and prediction modelling pipelines
• Understand the background and statistical methods important for drug development
• Provide analysis, reporting and interpretation of modelling projects
• Work in close consultation with professional methodologists and scientists working in medicine and vaccine development
• Become proficient in R programming and Python. Leverage version control through GitHub to enable collaboration
• Develop new skills working in an ‘agile’ way delivering on projects over short ‘sprints’
• Learn the theory of new statistical and machine learning methodologies and how to apply it by collaborating with highly skilled statisticians and attending training courses
• Experience the role of a statistical consultant, working closely with cross-functional teams to translate scientific or clinical problems into statistical ones
• Gain industry knowledge in potentially a wide range of therapeutic areas, overseeing short-term or long-term projects that cover multiple GSK drugs
