Job Description

The Girl Scout mission is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Behind every Girl Scout and volunteer is a team of local staff ready to help them earn that next badge, embark on a camping adventure, or organize an impactful service project. We are Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey (GSNNJ) serving girls in grades K-12 in Bergen, Morris, Passaic, Sussex and northern Warren counties. We bring the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to 19,000 girls and 10,200 adult members.

We are looking for a Program Facilitator to help run our FIRST LEGO League. The Program Facilitator is responsible for planning, leading, and inspiring girls to explore STEM concepts through hands-on LEGO robotics activities. This role focuses on creating a fun, safe, and engaging environment where girls can learn teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity while gaining confidence in science and technology. This includes working with a group of up to 24 girls in a safe and healthy environment at our Riverdale Service Center as well as other locations in New Jersey where competitions may be held.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Facilitate LEGO robotics sessions, guiding Girl Scouts through building, programming, and testing projects using LEGO robotics kits (e.g., LEGO® Education Spike Prime, Mindstorms, or similar).
  • Foster an inclusive, supportive, and girl-led environment where participants feel encouraged to experiment, ask questions, and collaborate.
  • Adapt activities to accommodate varying ages, skill levels, and learning styles.
  • Promote STEM learning by connecting robotics concepts to real-world applications and Girl Scout leadership outcomes.
  • Ensure all program equipment and materials are used responsibly, inventoried, and maintained in good condition.
  • Model and uphold Girl Scout values, including respect, teamwork, and courage.
  • Follow all health, safety, and risk management guidelines.
  • Assist with setup and cleanup of program space before and after sessions.
  • Communicate effectively with council staff and supervisors about program progress and needs.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Must be 18+ years of age
  • Must be punctual and attentive
  • Ability to attend assigned sessions, most of which occur weekends for approximately 4 hours
  • Availability to attend weekend events and competitions
  • Must be able to communicate well with other staff and community partners
  • Membership in GSUSA is required upon employment (paid by council)
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule
  • Ability to travel throughout North New Jersey to attend competitions and practices

The focus of this position will be facilitating LEGO FIRST League programs. Additional per diem Program Facilitator opportunities may be available throughout the Council based on program needs, qualifications, and availability. These additional opportunities are completely optional and provide flexibility for individuals who may be interested in taking on additional per diem work. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about working with children, enjoys facilitating engaging activities, and is comfortable representing the Council at programs and events. This is a great opportunity for someone looking for flexible, meaningful work with the potential to support a variety of programs across various departments. Per diem activities may take place at one of the camps, the Riverdale office, DreamLab (Paramus), or other off-site locations.

This is a per diem position and is not eligible for benefits besides the ones mandated by federal or state law.
