Position Overview:
Reporting to the Supervisor of Recreation, the Sport & Fitness Coordinator plans, promotes, delivers, and evaluates inclusive sport, fitness, wellness, and active living programs. This role leads staff, volunteers, and partners to provide safe, inclusive, high-quality, and sustainable services that increase participation, support community well-being, and deliver excellent customer service. It also provides operational leadership, oversees fitness spaces, and teaches core fitness classes to maintain service standards. As a member of the Recreation Leadership team, this position supports all business units and facility operations, helps oversee public spaces, and promotes a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment.
Core Accountabilities:
Program Development and Delivery
- Plan, deliver, evaluate, and continuously improve sport, fitness, wellness, active living, and recreation programs, including core classes, registered programs, and drop-in sport opportunities.
- Assess community needs, participation trends, and industry best practices to develop new programs and enhance existing services.
- Monitor program registrations and participation levels, adjusting schedules, services, and offerings to meet community needs and organizational objectives.
- Lead the management of fitness equipment and program supplies, including preventative maintenance, purchasing, cleaning, and inventory.
- Contribute to budget development, financial reporting, and revenue monitoring, supporting achievement of participation, service, and revenue targets.
Customer Service and Community Experience
- Communicate effectively and respectfully with staff, participants, community partners, and other interest holders to promote engagement, collaboration, and positive relationships.
- Develop and maintain partnerships with community organizations, recreation service providers, and other interest holders.
- Promote a positive image of the Town of Canmore and support marketing, communications, customer service, and community engagement initiatives that increase awareness and participation.
Staff Coordination and Leadership
- Recruit, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate staff and volunteers.
- Provide leadership within the Recreation Department that fosters a collaborative, positive, and high-performing work environment.
- Participate in team meetings to identify opportunities, solve challenges, and improve service delivery.
- Participate in the Manager on Duty program, providing after-hours leadership, operational support, and issue resolution as required across all business units.
- Support the management of public spaces in Recreation facilities.
- Demonstrate leadership, accountability, and professionalism while modeling Town values and contributing to a culture of continuous learning and exceptional service delivery.
Collaboration and Continuous Improvement
- Contribute to service continuity, program growth, and innovation through creative problem-solving and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with internal teams, community organizations, recreation service providers, and other interest holders.
- Demonstrate collaboration, innovation, and accountability in support of departmental and organizational priorities.
Health and Safety
- Fulfill the Supervisor responsibilities under the Town's Health & Safety Directive, ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation, risk management practices, and organizational policies and procedures.
- Maintain safe and inclusive environments for staff, contractors, volunteers, and participants. Promote compliance with WCB, OHS, and other applicable legislation
- Support operational risk management by monitoring facilities, equipment, programs, and service delivery practices to identify and address potential safety concerns.

Education, Experience & Certifications
Required
- Intermediate First Aid and CPR/AEC Level C
- Minimum two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in sport, fitness, recreation, or wellness programming.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
- Strong administrative skills, including maintaining accurate records, reports, and personnel documentation (e.g., certifications and training records)
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and changing priorities
Preferred/Asset
- Post-secondary education in Recreation Management, Kinesiology, Sport Management, Physical Education, Leisure Studies, Health Promotion, or related field
- Group Fitness certifications (CanFitPro, AFLCA,) or other additional fitness, coaching, or instructional certifications
- Previous supervisory experience
- Experience building partnerships and relationships with third-party organizations
- Experience with IntelliLeisure, Dayforce, or similar scheduling and recreation management systems ⬢⬢⬢
Salary & Benefits:
- Pay Range: $35.85 - $39.35 per hour- Pay rate will be calculated based on successful candidate’s related work experience and education.
