Position Description:

This role is for a Director of Orthopaedic Research in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. It exists to make research usable for busy surgeons. The Director is a full-time term faculty member with an appointment renewed annually. The Director of Orthopaedic Research sits with faculty and residents to turn a clinic idea into an answerable question and a study design. Core staff then write the protocol, file the IRB, collect and analyze the data, and draft the paper. The surgeon shapes the clinical message and presents. The Director also helps the department compete for grants, with faculty as PI.

Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree and a substantial peer-reviewed record in musculoskeletal science. Leadership of a multi-investigator portfolio, including IRB oversight, trainee mentorship, study design with clinicians, and supervision of professional staff as a peer with surgical faculty.
  • Demonstrated grantsmanship: industry, foundation, or federal proposals in support of faculty PIs. Eligibility for Professor (Term). Preferred: prior orthopaedic faculty appointment at associate professor or above, and national scholarly visibility.

Essential duties

  • Sit with surgeons and residents to refine the question, test feasibility, and design the study. Run a single intake. Accept, reshape, or decline studies within one week.
  • Hold authorship and data standards. No departmental dataset leaves the core without a written agreement. The office is measured on submitted papers and submitted proposals, not on activity.
  • Help the department win funding. Identify industry, foundation, and federal mechanisms. Pair faculty with opportunities. Contribute design, methods, and grantsmanship. Faculty remain PI. Route proposals with SOM sponsored programs.
  • Hire and supervise core staff, beginning with the clinical research coordinator. Own IRB, HIPAA, and sponsor compliance. Monthly dashboard to the Chair.
  • Direct resident research. Place medical students and other learners only on projects that serve department needs. Every resident has a named mentor and a tracked project. Surgeons present.
