Job Description

Tulane University School of Law invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, faculty position as Professor of the Practice of Law, teaching in the Academic Success program and reporting to the Director of Academic Success. This appointment will qualify as a position on the Law School’s Professor of the Practice (POP) track, with an initial contract of three to five years, renewable pursuant to University and Law School standards.

The Academic Success program plays a vital role in supporting student achievement during law school and supporting the years of bar exam preparation by graduates. Tulane is a national law school, with approximately one-third of our students taking the Louisiana bar exam and two-thirds taking the bar exam in common law jurisdictions. The POP will teach a minimum of two courses annually--initially focused on preparing students in their final year for common law bar exams. The common law courses will supplement any commercial bar preparation courses that students may choose to take. More specifically, the POP’s courses will provide instruction that is targeted at legal analysis, essay writing, multiple-choice strategies, and jurisdiction-specific content. In addition to classroom teaching, the POP will conduct academic support programming year-round, which will include individualized academic coaching. The POP also will collaborate with faculty and administrative leaders to develop programming that supports students who bring a range of backgrounds and experiences to their law school courses and their bar exam preparation. This POP position will report directly to the Director of Academic Success and work closely with the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, and other student-facing leaders.

Application Instructions:

Applicants should submit:

· A cover letter addressing their experience in and commitment to academic success pedagogy.

· A curriculum vitae.

· Contact information for three references.

· A law school transcript

Candidates are welcome to submit writing samples.

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

Duties and responsibilities of POP for Academic Support Program:

· Teach two Legal Analysis courses annually (based on material for common law jurisdictions).

· Aid in the development of academic success and bar programming for students and graduates, including presentations, workshops, orientation classes, and programming for first and second year students.

· Provide individualized academic coaching, advising, and support for students and graduates who are preparing for the bar exam.

· Provide individual and group instruction regarding academic success strategies and bar exam preparation, including but not limited to general study skills, exam skills, and time management skills, both during the academic year and after graduation.

· Engage in outreach activities to help students who are at risk of failing the bar exam and provide targeted support to repeat takers.

· Develop programming and communications to educate students about bar requirements, application processes, and law school course selection.

· Analyze and report on the effectiveness of academic success and bar support programs.

· Assist the Office of Academic Services and Office of Career Development in obtaining student and alumni data relating to bar admission.

Required Qualifications:

· J.D. degree from an accredited law school.

· Membership in good standing in a state bar.

· A minimum of one year of relevant experience in legal practice, equivalent legal activity, or academic teaching.

· An excellent academic record.

· Evidence of outstanding promise as a teacher.

Preferred Qualifications:

· 3-5 years of relevant experience.

· Experience with bar exam preparation and curricular programming.

· Experience working with student populations across a range of academic and professional goals.

· Excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication, writing, and editing skills.
