The Program in Digital and Computational Studies at Bates College invites applications for two full-time, open-rank, tenure-line positions in Computer Science, beginning July, 2027. We seek outstanding scholars with a strong commitment to excellent undergraduate teaching and mentorship in a liberal arts environment, and who will help to deepen the discipline of computer science in an interdisciplinary computing program.
While areas of expertise are open, the successful candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary computing in the liberal arts, in research areas which may include, but are not limited to: human computer interaction (HCI), artificial intelligence / machine learning (AI/ML), natural language processing (NLP), and disciplinary-based computer science education. We are especially interested in candidates who will add to the existing breadth of the DCS faculty. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated interest in teaching undergraduate students and supporting a diversity of students in computing with a range of prior programming experience (including none). Successful candidates will also have a demonstrated commitment to collaboration and collegiality. They will also demonstrate interest in collaboratively building an interdisciplinary and inclusive computing program for the liberal arts.
The anticipated salary range for this position is $87,000–$135,000, commensurate with rank, experience, qualifications, and other relevant factors. As an open-rank tenure-line search, the appointment may be made at the assistant professor, associate professor, or full professor level. The final salary offer will reflect the candidate’s academic experience, record of professional achievement, and the rank at which the appointment is made.
Digital & Computational Studies (DCS) is an interdisciplinary program that seeks to build bridges between core elements of computer science, data science, and digital studies, connecting to the arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and other existing interdisciplinary programs on campus. DCS teaches students to design, build, and analyze digital & computational tools and algorithms, while also developing the ability to critique those same tools and algorithms. Bates DCS faculty are prepared to support candidates as they develop courses designed for an interdisciplinary program.
The position carries a standard five-course teaching load either as a 2-3 or 3-2 across two semesters, or as a 2-2-1 across two semesters and the Bates Short Term. Faculty responsibilities include teaching, professional achievement, and governance and engagement, as described in Article II of the Bates College Faculty Handbook. Successful candidates will contribute to inclusive and evidence-based teaching, maintain an active program of scholarship or creative work, and participate in the life and governance of the College.
The successful candidates will teach introductory computer science sequences in Python (e.g. DCS 109X, DCS 229 Data Structures, and DCS 211 Computing for Insight), and other upper level computing courses based on their area(s) of expertise. They will also regularly teach the DCS senior capstone course; contribute to the general education curriculum, including teaching our college-wide First Year Seminar program; advise senior theses, and serve as an academic advisor.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Computer Science, completed no later than 01 July 2027.
