Job Description

The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU) and the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy (SEMTE) seek applicants for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position in Digital Engineering. SEMTE (https://semte.engineering.asu.edu/), one of the eight Fulton Schools, houses a vibrant community of researchers spanning mechanical and aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, and materials science and engineering (learn more at https://research.engineering.asu.edu/). We seek applicants who can enhance our abilities in these areas as part of a community of experts. Particular areas of interest include but are not limited to, AI/ML-driven engineering; digital models, simulation, and data-driven design; autonomous and adaptive materials processing and experimentation; intelligent sensing, characterization, and control; multiscale and reduced-order modeling; virtual testing and digital engineering of structures, materials, and manufacturing processes; monitoring, prediction, and control of complex physical systems; and development of X-labs.

We search for applicants who will contribute to our academic programs, promote transdisciplinary teaching and research, and help the university to achieve its aspirations, including enabling student success, transforming society, valuing entrepreneurship, and conducting use-inspired research. Faculty members in the Fulton Schools are expected to develop an internationally recognized and externally funded research program, adopt effective pedagogical practices in the development and delivery of undergraduate and graduate courses, advise both undergraduate and graduate student research and projects, and undertake service activities.

At SEMTE, digital engineering is viewed as a unifying architecture that connects physical systems, computational models, sensing, data, and intelligent decision-making. In Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE), this includes modeling, simulation, sensing, data, control, and decision-making to understand, predict, and adapt the behavior of physical systems and engineering processes. Relevant directions include virtual testing and multiscale modeling of structures and materials, high-fidelity and reduced-order modeling of coupled thermal and fluid systems, digital representations of manufacturing and processing environments, diagnostics and prognostics, and intelligent sensing, planning, and control of complex engineering systems. In Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), digital engineering includes intelligent and adaptive materials processing and experimentation environments in which synthesis, characterization, modeling, data science, and AI work together to determine what experiments to run next, which parameters to explore, what information is missing, and how processing conditions should adapt as new information emerges. Research areas encompass functional, quantum, and energy materials; structural materials and biomaterials; advanced microscopy, including transmission electron microscopy; materials sustainability and lifecycle assessment; and critical materials recovery. Candidates with expertise in one or more of these areas should articulate a broader digital-engineering vision that connects their expertise to emerging AI-enabled physical systems and adaptive research environments that tightly integrate experiments, computation, sensing, and intelligent decision-making.

Appointment will be at the Assistant/Associate/(f)ull Professor rank, commensurate with the candidate’s experience and accomplishments, beginning August 2027.

Candidates will be asked to create or use an existing Interfolio Dossier to submit the following:

  • Cover letter
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Statement describing research interests (Three pages maximum)
  • Statement describing teaching interests and philosophy (two pages maximum)
  • Contact information for three references

The ASU Charter states, “ASU is a comprehensive public research university, measured not by whom it excludes, but by whom it includes and how they succeed; advancing research and discovery of public value; and assuming fundamental responsibility for the economic, social, cultural and overall health of the communities it serves.” The Fulton Schools of Engineering is dedicated to cultivating excellence, delivering innovation that matters, encouraging bold thinking, fostering a community of learning and collaboration, and building a foundation for all to be successful. Applicants are encouraged to address how their past, current, and future activities align with the ASU Charter and Fulton Schools of Engineering values in their application materials.
