Job Description

Division/ Region/ Office I&E/AMECA/Durban (R&H)

Function: Roads and Highways

REPORTS TO

Section Manager or any other person appointed to supervise him/her from time to time.

PRIMARY POSITION PURPOSE

This position is responsible for the technical geometric design of road projects within the Section and providing assistance to Senior Engineers/Scientists/Other Professionals/Consultants in the successful delivery of multidisciplinary projects. Only candidates with advanced Bentley Open Roads software experience will be considered.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Make good decisions on own initiative

  • Good software tool understanding, works alone with minimum supervision whilst producing tool deliverables

  • Able to organise information well and communicate design intent through software tool output. e.g.

  • structure a drawing correctly and communicate design intent through drawing using CAD

  • Understands the principles of the design process and how design is translated into deliverables through the use of software tools.

  • Understands the key project issues and how these influence their individual work

  • Taking ownership and responsibility for their own work and completing it to time and cost

  • Trains technicians and junior staff in relevant software tools

  • Supervises and checks the work of other team members

  • Develops increased design ability and quality

  • Drafts technical reports of acceptable technical and presentational quality

  • Able to present / represent their technical work, able to draft responses to straightforward bids – assistance sought with commercial aspects

  • Develop knowledge of the commercial aspects of project management

  • Successful in identifying and following through on leads associated with additional work prospects on the projects they are involved with

  • Regular client contact under direction of more senior manager

  • Ability to check and inspect constructed works for compliance with design and specifications Undertakes monitoring and proposes remedial actions

  • Understand and implement local functional business technologies and markets

  • Direct and manage project development from beginning to end

  • Develop project scope and deliverables that support client business goals in collaboration with all stakeholders

  • Develop full-scale project plans and associated communications documents

  • Effectively communicate project expectations to team members and stakeholders in a timely and clear fashion

  • Liaise with project stakeholders on an on-going basis

  • Estimate the resources and participants needed to achieve project goals

  • Determine and assess need for additional staff and/or consultants and make the appropriate recruitments

  • Set and continually manage project expectations with team members and other stakeholders

  • Delegate tasks and responsibilities to appropriate personnel

  • Identify and resolve issues and conflicts within the project team, Identify and manage project dependencies and critical path

  • Plan and schedule project timelines and milestones using appropriate tools, Track project milestones and deliverables

  • Develop and deliver progress reports, proposals, requirements documentation, and presentations

  • Proactively manage changes in project scope, identify potential crises, and devise contingency plans

  • Coach, mentor, motivate and supervise project team members and contractors, and influence them to take positive action and accountability for their assigned work

  • Build, develop and grow any business relationships vital to the success of the project

  • Conduct project post mortems and create recommendations report in order to identify successful and unsuccessful project elements

  • Proactive approach in developing work or being aware of what projects are likely to come up from key clients

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bentley Open Roads software proficiency is required

  • BSc/ BTech degree from accredited university/college

  • Professional registration (Pr Eng/Pr Tech)

  • Ability to effectively write reports

  • Professional delivery and appearance to ensure SMEC image is maintained

  • Courteous and business orientated manners when communicating with stakeholders to foster and promote good working relations
