Primary Purpose:

To manage the student life cycle and day-to-day program administration for Professional Accounting Programs, including but not limited to the Master of Professional Accounting program and initiatives through the Accounting Centre at the Edwards School of Business (Edwards).

Nature of Work:

Reporting to the Director, Professional Accounting Programs, this individual works closely with a diverse population and builds working relationships with a variety of stakeholders including prospective and current MPAcc students at Edwards School of Business, alumni, faculty and staff, College of Graduate Studies and Research (CGPS), Student Enrollment Services Division, the CPA Western School of Business, and other University and business communities. The position is a student-centered, customer service-oriented environment, subject to competing interests, multiple projects, and continual deadlines. This position is subject to constant internal and external deadlines and shifting priorities. Discretionary decision-making and a high level of accuracy is required. This person gives presentations to prospective and current students. Some provincial and national travel will be expected.

Accountabilities:

  • Provides guidance and assistance to the Director regarding student progress, prospective student applications, and implementation of policies, procedures, guidelines and unique or exceptional circumstances to ensure consistency and quality within the professional accounting programs administration.
  • Highly involved in recruitment of students for Professional Accounting Programs. Provides program and admission information and individual assistance to prospective and admitted students engaged in the admission process; facilitates the delivery of information sessions to prospective students promoting interest in the program; ensures a high level of timely service to promote positive relationships and professionally represent the program.
  • Supports the admission objectives of all graduate accounting programs by managing admissions, including monitoring applications, reviewing credentials, evaluating transcripts, assessing eligibility, and making preliminary admission decisions.
  • Ensures the needs of the applicants are being met by effectively organizing workflow and identifying process improvements.
  • Effectively liaises with the CGPS and Student Enrollment and Services Division to monitor changes in admission policies and procedures, and to ensure the successful transition of applicants to registrants.
  • Seeks to familiarize and understand credentials from other domestic post-secondary institutions to ensure the appropriate acceptance for admission to professional accounting programs.
  • Continuously tracks student progress to assist Director with individual program changes.
  • Collaborate with other internal and external departments to develop and implement various promotion, recruitment and retention initiatives and events to enhance the student experience.
  • Manage general inquiries about professional accounting programs including Unibuddy inquiries as well as other social media platforms.
  • Work with the Director in managing day-to-day operations and program administration, including student registration, class build, class maintenance, creation of class cohorts and student groups as needed, and overall operation coordination of programs.
  • Assists with general event management for programs such as catering, venue booking, preparation and assembly of material for registration and orientation, including student handbooks and bio books.
  • Monitor student progress towards convocation and make recommendations for convocation.
  • Program support with respect to teaching administration, such as hiring and managing of T.A.’s and markers, and monitoring and organizing applications to faculty positions in the Department of Accounting.
  • Administrative and committee meeting support for the Master of Professional Accounting Program Committee, Accounting Centre, and Department of Accounting as required.
  • Event management and logistics coordination for initiatives of the Accounting Centre and Department of Accounting, including but not limited to Welcome to the Major, Accounting Bootcamp, and Community Volunteer Income Tax Program.
  • Additional responsibilities as required.

Qualifications:

Education:

Minimum of an undergraduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Experience:

  • at a post-secondary institution in academic advising, preferably with demonstrated abilities in student recruitment and enrolment management.
  • giving online or in-person presentations
  • collaborating with various constituents
  • knowledge and appreciation of academic administrative policies and procedures,
  • experience with technologies and systems used in post-secondary institutions is highly valued.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail;
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal, including diplomacy and tact with enthusiastic professionalism in dealing with people;
  • Proven ability to work independently, collaboratively and as an effective team member and to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and work assignments; ability to anticipate project needs, discern work priorities, pay keen attention to details, and meet deadlines;
  • Ability to initiate innovative change strategies that result in improvements to service quality, and the effectiveness of systems and processes;
  • Demonstrated strong computer skills including keyboarding and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), PAWS, and other university systems, such as RMS Recruit, Sirius Plus/Banner, etc. Familiarity with U of S information and processing systems would be an asset.
