The Environmental Division of the Great American Insurance Group provides a comprehensive portfolio of environmental insurance products to a broad array of industries. All products can be customized to address the specific risks and exposures of the client.

We are looking for an Underwriter Trainee to join our Exton, PA office! This position will operate on a hybrid schedule.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Participates in activities related to risk selection/rejection, pricing, retention, growth, and profitability per divisional objectives.
  • Works with the underwriting team to learn how to price business, analyze coverage and how to develop and maintain effective business relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Learns to assess risk quality and compliance within company guidelines and to initiate appropriate loss prevention actions.
  • Learns to use independent judgment and initiative to support business goals.
  • Participates in visiting agents, brokers, and producers with a more senior underwriter and learns to retain existing accounts, build and maintain business relationships, and develop new opportunities in support of divisional objectives.
  • Learns to interpret, explain, and market products and services.
  • Learns to apply underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Engineering, Risk Management or a related discipline.
  • 0-4 years of insurance or environmental experience is preferred.
  • Strong MS Office skills and must be good with technology.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Scope of Job: Performs work under close supervision and technical direction. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Develops working knowledge of business systems and processes used to perform the functions of the job. Works within narrowly defined limits and authority on assignments of low complexity. Position requires occasional day and overnight travel, more than 10% but less than 40% of time, to visit agents and brokers. Typically does not prospect or solicit new agents. Uses communication skills to build effective customer relationships and to explain/promote products and services.
