Great American is one of the few carriers with a dedicated Property & Inland Marine Division and, in the industry segments it covers, with expertise second to none. From the underwriters to claims representatives, the focus is strictly on property and inland marine coverages. They are dedicated to writing only these coverages, which include Commercial Property Coverage, Inland Marine Coverage, Builder's Risk, Contractor's Equipment and Motor Truck Cargo. They specialize in the construction, energy & renewables, and transportation industries.
Our Property & Inland Marine team is looking for a Production Underwriter to join their team. This role is based out of our Houston, TX office and requires approximately 25% travel. Great American’s culture is built on connection, shared learning, and strong relationships. To support this, employees in this role are expected to be on-site four days a week, with the flexibility to work one day remotely. Core in‑office days are Tuesday–Thursday, with the fourth day determined by business needs.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
Evaluates and underwrites new and renewal business in accordance with Company underwriting guidelines and risk appetite.
Analyzes risk data to make informed decisions on coverage, pricing, and terms.
Collaborates with actuaries, agents, brokers, and clients to obtain necessary information and clarify details.
Orders and evaluates additional reports and screens, such as motor vehicle reports, loss history reports, outside inspections, etc., to inform decisions.
Ensures proper documentation of underwriting decisions and compliance with state and federal insurance regulations.
Evaluates existing policies for potential renewal or modification.
Communicates underwriting decisions clearly and effectively to internal teams, agents, and brokers.
Stays updated on industry trends, regulatory changes, and market conditions.
Develops and maintains effective business relationships with internal and external customers/coworkers, focusing on generating new business and retaining profitable business.
Interprets, explains, and promotes products and services to drive market growth.
Leverages advanced marketing techniques to interpret, explain, and promote the Company’s products to brokers and agents.
Monitors market trends and competition to identify opportunities for product enhancements and marketing strategies.
Organizes and participates in marketing initiatives, including presentations, industry events, and broker/agent meetings to showcase products and services.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Marketing, Economics, Risk Management and Insurance, or a related field or equivalent experience.
Generally, a minimum of 6 months of experience in commercial P&C underwriting. Property and inland marine underwriting experience is preferred.
Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.
