Production Research Associate

Job Purpose:

  • Major Tasks The Production Research Associate is a critical contributor to the advancement of Production Research through the disciplined execution of field trials and the effective delivery of research initiatives.
  • Reporting to theSSA Research and Testing Mission Coordinator, the role is accountable for generating high-quality data and insights that support the continuous improvement of seed production systems.
  • The incumbent supports the implementation of regional and global Proof of Concept (POC) initiatives, drives operational excellence through rigorous execution and process improvement, and contributes to the development of innovative solutions aimed at enhancing seed production yield, quality, and reliability.
  • In addition, the role requires close collaboration with internal stakeholders and the application of data analytics to inform decisions, strengthen research outcomes, and enable value-adding recommendations across the seed production environment.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Production Research Field Trials: Lead and execute Production Research field trials across multiple locations in Zambia, ensuring all trials are established, monitored,and completed in full alignment with approved research methodologies, protocols, and quality standards.
  • Execution of POC Projects: Support the delivery of regional and global Proof of Concept (POC) initiatives by ensuring effective trial design, disciplined implementation, and execution in accordance with Production Research objectives.
  • Operational Excellence: Drive continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to strengthen operational processes, reduce inefficiencies, and enhance the effectiveness of the Production Research testing system through rigorous analysis of trial outcomes and performance feedback.
  • Technology Implementation and Support: Contribute to the integration and application of emerging technologies across the genetic, trait, and technology pipeline to strengthen seed production capability and research effectiveness.
  • Collaboration and Consultation: Collaborate with global teams and internal stakeholders to share insights, incorporate feedback, and provide informed input on the applicability, effectiveness, and strategic relevance of field trials and research initiatives.
  • Data Analytics: Apply data analytics tools and methodologies to monitor, analyse, and interpret field trial results, generating robust, data-driven insights and recommendations for stakeholders.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Communicate findings, progress, and risks to internal stakeholders in a clear and timely manner, ensuring alignment with broader Production Research priorities. Present trial and POC results in concise, actionable formats and contribute to discussions that inform future research direction and decision-making.
  • Workforce Management: Support the development of site capabilityby training and contributing to the growth of talent resources, including interns and contract employees.

HSE Responsibilities:

  • Lead HSE efforts according to ISO 45001 and Bayer safety standards focusing on legal compliance and identifying safety risks applying the HIRA methodology
  • Adhere to all applicable legislation, Bayer safety policies and procedures
  • Actively promote the Bayer safety cultureand best practices and best practices
  • Participate in compiling Risk assessments and Job safety analysis
    Actively record safety observation and near misses
    Participate in 5WHY problem solving identifying corrective and preventative actions

Required Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science degree with a minimum of five years’ relevant experience, or a Master of Science degree with a minimum of two years’ relevant experience, in an appropriate agricultural discipline, including agricultural research, plant physiology, plant breeding, or a related field.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in the design and execution of field and laboratory trial programs.
  • Proven track record of innovation and the effective application of modern technologies to enhance research execution and outcomes.
  • Working knowledge of seed production operations would be advantageous.
  • Experience operating effectively within team-based environments, with the ability to influence and collaborate across matrixed organizations and diverse stakeholder networks.

Required:

  • Strong results orientation, with the demonstrated ability to influence outcomes within a matrixed organization and across cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent communication capabilities, both oral and written, with the ability to engage effectively across diverse situations and stakeholder audiences.
  • Demonstrated willingness and readiness to operate effectively under field-based working conditions.
  • Capacity and flexibility to travel up to 40% of the time in support of operational and research requirements.
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes and achieving performance objectives.

Desired:

  • Strong data analytics and interpretation capabilities, with the ability to translate findings into meaningful insights and actionable recommendations.
  • Foundational knowledge of seed production, pest and disease identification, and associated control practices would be advantageous.
  • Exposure to Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing methodologies, with the ability to support continuous improvement and operational efficiency initiatives.
