The Production Mechanic is responsible for assembling, disassembling, and maintaining mechanical components and systems used in rail vehicle production. This role includes interpreting blueprints, performing precision mechanical work, and ensuring all assemblies meet quality and safety standards. The ideal candidate has strong technical skills, mechanical aptitude, and a high level of attention to detail in a production environment.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Assembly & Disassembly

  • Perform mechanical assembly and disassembly of components and subsystems according to engineering drawings and work instructions.
  • Install, align, and secure parts using appropriate fastening methods and torque specifications.
  • Conduct adjustments, fits, and alignments to ensure proper functionality and tolerances.
  • Inspect components for wear, damage, or defects and report findings.

Blueprint & Work Instruction Interpretation

  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Follow detailed assembly procedures and sequencing requirements.
  • Verify parts and components against specifications prior to assembly.

Tools & Equipment

  • Use hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments effectively and safely.
  • Perform torquing operations using calibrated torque tools in accordance with specifications.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in proper working condition and report any issues.

Organization & Workmanship

  • Maintain an organized and efficient workspace in accordance with production standards.
  • Ensure proper labeling, handling, and storage of parts and materials.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail in all aspects of assembly and inspection work.

Quality & Compliance

  • Follow all technical specifications, quality standards, and production procedures.
  • Perform in-process inspections to verify accuracy and completeness of assemblies.
  • Document work performed and communicate discrepancies or issues to supervisors.

Safety

  • Adhere to all safe working practices, including proper use of PPE and tool safety.
  • Follow OSHA, environmental, and company safety regulations.
  • Participate in safety training and contribute to a clean and hazard-free work environment.

Qualifications

Required

  • Experience in mechanical assembly, maintenance, or production environments (rail, automotive, aerospace, or similar).
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and work instructions.
  • Proficiency using hand tools, torque tools, and mechanical equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work in physically demanding environments (standing, bending, lifting up to 50 lbs).

Preferred

  • Experience working on rail vehicles, heavy equipment, or large-scale assemblies.
  • Familiarity with torque specifications, fastener standards, and mechanical tolerances.
  • Technical certification or training in mechanical assembly or industrial maintenance.
