Reports to: Plant Manager
Position Description: The Production Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of print manufacturing operations to ensure products are produced safely, efficiently, on schedule, and to quality standards. This role manages production personnel, equipment utilization, workflow planning, scheduling, continuous improvement initiatives, and departmental performance metrics to meet customer expectations and company objectives.
Production Manager Responsibilities:
Production Management
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise daily print production activities.
- Ensure production schedules are met while maintaining quality and efficiency standards.
- Monitor workflow from prepress through finishing and shipping.
- Allocate labor and equipment resources to maximize productivity.
- Manage production priorities to meet customer delivery requirements.
Team Leadership
- Lead, coach, and develop supervisors, operators, and production staff.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback.
- Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Coordinate employee training and cross-training initiatives.
- Assist with recruiting, onboarding, and retention efforts.
Quality Assurance
- Ensure compliance with customer specifications and quality standards.
- Investigate and resolve production quality issues.
- Implement corrective and preventive actions to reduce defects and waste.
- Monitor key quality metrics and drive continuous improvement efforts.
Operational Excellence
- Drive Lean Manufacturing, 5S, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Monitor production KPIs and identify opportunities for increased efficiency.
- Reduce downtime, rework, and material waste.
- Collaborate with maintenance to maximize equipment uptime.
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
- Conduct regular safety meetings and audits.
- Investigate workplace incidents and implement corrective actions.
- Maintain compliance with environmental and regulatory requirements.
Planning & Scheduling
- Work closely with Customer Service, Sales, and Scheduling teams.
- Review production backlog and prioritize work orders.
- Ensure material availability and production readiness.
- Develop contingency plans for equipment or staffing challenges.
- Maintain Skills and Competency Matrix
Financial Responsibility
- Manage labor costs and departmental budgets.
- Monitor overtime and staffing levels.
- Support capital expenditure planning and equipment investments.
- Contribute to EBITDA improvement through productivity and waste reduction initiatives.
QualificationsEducation:
- Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing, Operations Management, Business, Graphic Communications, or related field preferred.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Experience:
- 5+ years of production management experience in a printing or manufacturing environment.
- Experience with digital, flexographic, screen, large-format, engraving/routing, or label printing operations preferred.
- Experience leading teams of 20+ employees.
- Strong understanding of production scheduling and workflow management.
