Production Manager – Machine Shop

About the Role:

The Production Manager oversees all machining operations within the machine shop. This role is responsible for ensuring safe, efficient, and high‑quality production. This role manages people, processes, and equipment to meet output, delivery, and quality expectations while advancing continuous improvement and machining capability while ensuring compliance with all Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure and enforce a safe working environment with strong adherence to machining safety standards.
  • Lead, coach, and develop machining personnel to meet production and quality goals.
  • Plan and schedule machining operations to meet customer delivery and output targets.
  • Monitor daily machining performance and adjust staffing and priorities as needed.
  • Resolve machining, tooling, and process issues through collaboration with engineering and quality.
  • Optimize machining processes to improve throughput, reduce cost, and enhance quality.
  • Analyze production data and apply continuous improvement methods to eliminate waste and reduce variation.
  • Manage labor, equipment, tooling, and material resources for efficiency and utilization.
  • Apply structured problem‑solving methods such as 5‑Why and root‑cause analysis to resolve machining issues.
  • Lead cross‑functional collaboration with engineering, planning, quality, and supply chain.
  • Report production performance, variances, issues, and improvement actions to leadership.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, or related field preferred; equivalent experience accepted.
  • Experience supervising or managing operations in a machine shop or machining environment.
  • Strong understanding of machining processes, CNC operations, and production workflows.
  • Experience with multi‑axis CNC machine programming, tooling, and process optimization.
  • Knowledge of tool selection, feeds, and speeds for materials such as copper, steel, and aluminum.
  • Advanced knowledge of CNC machining operations and precision manufacturing.
  • Understanding of machining quality standards, inspection methods, and GD&T.
  • Troubleshooting skills related to machining programs, tooling, setups, and parameters.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and machining specifications.
  • Experience applying lean manufacturing or continuous improvement principles.
  • Capability to interpret production data and use metrics to drive decisions and improvements.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills to work effectively across teams.
