Job Description

PIC, a Genus PLC company, has an exciting opportunity. We are looking for a Production Manager who is responsible for planning and directing all phases of breeding, farrowing & wean to finish production at Apex Gene Transfer Center (GTC). The Production Manager will implement action plans to meet department-specific and company-set goals by communicating with supervisors, technicians, and cross-functional teams. This role will ensure accurate semen production, inventory management, and fulfillment of domestic and export orders while maintaining PIC’s superior genetic quality standards.

The position is based at the APEX GTC facility in Mound City, SD.

The salary range for this position is between $55,000 - $70,000 per year. The salary provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. Genus considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

You Will

  • • Responsible for the achievement of key performance indicators on a weekly, monthly, and annual basis resulting in the annual accomplishment of associated budgets and production goals • Responsible for the daily schedule of activities in semen collection and processing • Coordination of accurate fulfilment of internal and external semen orders, both domestic and export • Staff training and on-boarding of new employees • Execution of health management programs and health reporting functions across the area of responsibility • Coordination of all herd health testing and monitoring, and health paperwork for export semen orders • Treat sick animals in accordance to PIC Health Assurance guidelines • Responsible to fulfill prioritized semen orders from genetically-elite sires for multiple mating strategies, across multiple sire lines, as directed by PIC Genetic Services • Execution of feeding practices, timely feed ordering, and proper sire body condition • Maintain accurate record keeping in Prism and PICTraq databases • Produce accurate production information and update all department records as required • Implementation of evolving SOP’s • Responsible for ordering supplies, inventory control, and the maintenance of specialized equipment and technologies • Direct and prioritize maintenance personnel as it relates to their allocated time in the department • Assist with maintaining the cleanliness of the barn, laboratory, office and employee areas, with particular focus on excellent laboratory hygiene • Ensure all aspects of our genetic improvement, bio-security, animal welfare, and safety programs are in full compliance, where variances from the prescribed programs are detected and action plans outlined to bring the programs into compliance • Follow the Company’s animal care policies and procedures including: providing a physical environment that meets the sires’ needs, providing access to adequate water and high-quality feed, providing humane treatment of the sires, providing appropriate treatment of sires in need of health care, and following proper guidelines for euthanasia • Provide employee review and performance assessments concurrent with corporate strategy while providing input relating to employee merit • Responsible for being in compliance with all environmental laws and procedures, reporting all environmental issues immediately to their supervisor • Ensure staff understanding of the Company’s emergency notification process and how it applies to their specific worksite • Ensure staff understanding of all safety requirements of the job and for performing the job in compliance with the safety requirements • Effective communication with teammates, interdependent departments, and supervisors in order to competently achieve goals • All other duties as assigned necessary for the care of the sires, the facility, and the semen production process

Requirements

  • Minimum of a high school diploma; college degree preferred
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience within contemporary swine production systems or Gene Transfer Center operations, partnered with proven results
  • Previous boar stud or semen processing experience preferred
  • Proven experience working with culturally diverse teams in a fast-paced environment
  • Proven ability to establish priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and solve problems in a production environment
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other relevant software applications; ability to learn new software programs
  • Demonstrated ability to train and develop employees
  • Strong commitment to teamwork and continuous improvement
  • Willingness to shower daily in and out of facility and follow strict biosecurity procedures
  • Ability to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and emergency situations as needed
  • Ability to perform physical labor in a production environment
  • Ability to travel approximately 5–10%
