The Product Owner serves as the key bridge between Underwriting business teams and Technology, ensuring that underwriting solutions effectively support risk evaluation, submission intake, referral workflows, pricing support, quote/bind processes, and operational efficiency in the Commercial P&C insurance space. This role owns the product vision and roadmap for underwriting capabilities that support multiple underwriting product lines while also driving shared solutions and process improvements across the broader underwriting organization.
This role is expected to be hands-on in solution shaping and delivery, working side by side with cross-functional teams to define workflows, prototype capabilities, refine requirements, and improve how underwriting work gets done. The ideal candidate brings strong product acumen, systems thinking, and first-principles problem solving, with the ability to translate underwriting needs into scalable workflow, platform, data, and integration solutions.
This role also requires comfort applying modern product management principles, including clear prioritization and roadmap sequencing using approaches such as Now / Next / Later, while using modern productivity and AI-enabled tools such as Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, and similar technologies to accelerate analysis, story writing, process design, and execution.
Essential Functions
Product Strategy and Planning
- Partner with Product Manager and business leaders in Underwriting, Product Development, Actuarial, Operations, and Technology to define and communicate the underwriting vision, strategy, and roadmap in alignment with business goals and operational priorities.
- Own underwriting capabilities that support multiple product lines, while identifying opportunities for shared workflows, reusable solutions, and consistent processes across the underwriting organization.
- Develop and maintain a roadmap covering underwriting capabilities such as submission intake, triage, clearance, referral workflows, appetite and rules support, quote/bind workflow, and integration with core policy, data, and document platforms.
- Apply systems thinking to understand upstream and downstream impacts across Underwriting, Product, Actuarial, Operations, and Technology when shaping priorities and solution direction.
- Use underwriting, workflow, and operational analytics to inform decisions, prioritize enhancements, and improve business outcomes.
- Monitor key product KPIs such as adoption, workflow efficiency, turnaround time, referral cycle time, and user feedback to evaluate product success and guide continuous improvement.
- Use modern product management principles, like Now / Next / Later planning, to communicate roadmap sequencing, align stakeholders, and focus delivery on the highest-value outcomes.
Backlog Management
- Own, prioritize, and maintain the product backlog to ensure alignment with underwriting, operational, and organizational priorities.
- Translate business requirements into clear user stories, acceptance criteria, process flows, business rules, and solution requirements for underwriting tools and related platforms.
- Partner closely with architects, engineering, data, and business stakeholders to break down complex underwriting needs into scalable, deliverable increments.
- Balance quick-win enhancements with foundational improvements such as workflow consistency, data quality, governance, usability, platform performance, and reuse across product lines.
- Continuously refine backlog priorities based on stakeholder feedback, business outcomes, product usage, dependencies, team capacity, and evolving underwriting needs.
- Use modern tools and AI-enabled technologies such as Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, and similar technologies to accelerate backlog refinement, requirements drafting, and solution exploration while applying sound judgment and governance
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Serve as the primary point of contact for underwriting solution needs across multiple product lines and shared underwriting functions.
- Facilitate workshops and discovery sessions to understand underwriting workflows, pain points, decision-support needs, and opportunities for scalable process improvements.
- Partner with underwriting leaders, SMEs, operations, analytics, and technology teams to translate business needs into practical, scalable, and effective solutions.
- Drive shared understanding of business process, technical constraints, dependencies, and implementation tradeoffs across stakeholders.
- Coordinate with training and change management teams to support adoption, readiness, and rollout of new capabilities.
- Foster an underwriter-centric mindset, ensuring that enhancements improve usability, consistency, efficiency, and ease of doing business for internal teams and distribution partners.
- Collaborate across product lines to identify opportunities for shared capabilities, reusable workflows, and enterprise-aligned underwriting solutions.
Sprint Planning and Execution
- Lead sprint planning and backlog refinement for the underwriting product team, articulating sprint goals, priorities, and expected business value.
- Ensure user stories are well-defined, refined, and ready for development, with clear acceptance criteria, business context, workflow logic, and test scenarios.
- Collaborate closely with delivery leads, engineers, analysts, designers, QA, and data teams to deliver high-quality releases.
- Participate actively in daily standups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives to monitor progress, remove blockers, and drive continuous improvement.
- Validate completed work against acceptance criteria and coordinate user acceptance testing with business stakeholders to ensure solutions meet underwriting needs and quality standards.
- Work hands-on with the team to shape workflows, refine requirements, prototype ideas, and guide solution decisions using modern collaboration and AI-assisted tools where appropriate.
Qualifications/Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Product Owner, Technical Product Owner, Senior Business Analyst, Product Manager, or similar role.
- Minimum of 2–3 years of hands-on experience with insurance platforms such as Solartis, Guidewire, Duck Creek, Majesco, or similar platforms.
- 2–3 years of experience within E&S insurance, with a focus on underwriting strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience working closely with engineering, architecture, data, and business teams to deliver technology solutions in Agile environments.
- Experience working within Agile frameworks required.
- Experience supporting workflow-driven, platform-based, or operational business solutions preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of commercial P&C insurance and underwriting workflows, including submissions, quoting, binding, renewals, endorsements, referrals, and related operational processes.
- Strong product acumen, systems thinking, and solution mindset, with the ability to translate underwriting needs into scalable solutions across multiple product lines and shared underwriting functions.
- Ability to apply first-principles thinking to analyze complex business problems, simplify fragmented processes, and define practical solution paths.
- Familiarity with modern product management principles and prioritization approaches, including Now / Next / Later planning for roadmap communication and sequencing.
- Ability to translate business needs into clear user stories, acceptance criteria, process flows, workflow requirements, and scalable solution designs.
- Strong knowledge of Agile product ownership, backlog management, and cross-functional delivery practices.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work directly with delivery teams to shape and implement practical business solutions.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with tools such as Power BI, Power Platform, Copilot, Azure DevOps, and Teams preferred.
SALARY: The estimated salary range for this position is $140,000.00 - $170,000.00 per year. This is a good-faith assessment of the salary range for this position only. In determining the actual salary within this range, MSIG USA will consider a candidate’s relevant experience, location, and other job-related factors.
