Job Description

WJAC has an immediate opening for a creative News Producer/Multi-Media Journalist!

6 News is expanding its morning news coverage and looking for a journalist who can produce a compelling newscast, and report live in the field.

This is a hybrid role for someone with strong local news judgment, solid writing skills and the ability to recognize the stories viewers need to know about each morning. You will produce a reporter-driven morning newscast, then transition to live reporting for our expanded morning coverage.

We are the region’s number one source for local news and are preparing to deliver even more distinctive content across new and expanding broadcasts. We need a journalist who is organized, deadline-driven, creative and comfortable working both behind the scenes and in front of the camera.

Broadcast producing or live-reporting experience is helpful, but we are willing to train the right person with strong storytelling instincts and a commitment to local news. Some video editing will be required.

If you are ready for a hands-on role that combines producing, reporting and breaking news, we would like to hear from you.

The ideal candidate will have:

MMJ Responsibilities include:

  • Enterprise and pitch original, impactful story ideas
  • Develop sources and build relationships throughout Central Pennsylvania
  • Report, shoot, write and edit daily news stories and content on multiple platforms
  • Deliver compelling live reports from the field
  • Collaborate with photographers, producers and other journalists on major stories and special coverage
  • Respond quickly and creatively to breaking news
  • Producer Responsibilities include:
  • Be able to multitask and manage time in order to put together an exciting and informative newscast
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and deadline driven environment
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • The ability to execute news strategies and goals in daily newscasts
  • Flexibility and on-the-spot problem solving abilities are a must
  • Proficient with non-linear editing (i.e. Avid) and newsroom systems, such as iNews
  • Skills and Experience:
  • Sharp news judgment and a strong understanding of what matters to local audiences
  • Strong writing and storytelling skills, including knowledge of AP style
  • Ability to tell impactful stories on deadline
  • Excellent shooting, editing and technical skills
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative newsroom
  • Ability to develop sources and enterprise stories beyond the daily news cycle
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and a good driving record
  • Experience:
  • Must have at least some previous news producing experience or reporting at a commercial TV station, although the right entry-level candidate may be considered
  • A journalism degree is preferred
