Job Description

BESS Procurement Manager with strong contractual focus

About Return
Return is the leading European independent energy storage provider, committed to revolutionizing the energy sector. Headquartered in Amsterdam and offices in Munich, Hamburg and Berlin, Return offers innovative, sustainable solutions to store and intelligently manage energy, ensuring power is used efficiently when and where it’s needed most. With a growing presence across Europe, Return is at the forefront of the energy transition, integrating large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) to support grid stability, renewable energy integration, and Europe's net-zero goals. Driven by a team of experts, Return aims to provide reliable energy storage that powers the future of clean energy.

About the Role
Return is building one of Europe's largest renewable energy portfolios, with a rapidly growing pipeline of battery energy storage systems (BESS) projects across the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Poland, and beyond. As many of these projects move into the contracting phase, we're scaling up our procurement capability to match our ambitions.

Our procurement team has developed a smart, standardised approach to handle projects at scale; clustering contracts, streamlining processes, and driving consistency across technical, commercial, and contractual dimensions. To bring this into execution, we're looking for a driven and experienced Procurement Manager with experience in renewable energy projects and/or electrical infrastructure to join our team.

What You'll Do

You will be in the lead on tenders and the negotiation of framework- and project agreements with for BESS projects in Germany and beyond. Besides that, you'll be responsible to together with procurement colleagues further develop the base of German BESS contractors for electrical and Balance of Plant (BoP) works. In practice, this means:

  • Managing procurement processes from launch through to contract-ready outcomes.

  • Acting as the central connector between our HV/BoP and BESS procurement colleagues, technical team, country-based project developers, and contractors, i.e. the spider in the web.

  • Collaborating across workstreams: asset management, construction, origination, and finance, to ensure agreements reflect the right technical requirements and commercial terms.

  • Working with external legal and technical advisors to strengthen our contractual position.

  • Manage due diligence processes for the contracts under your control.

  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with both existing and future contract partners.

  • Keeping Return's procurement database up to date with supplier assessments, technology benchmarking, and market trend analyses.

Who You Are

You're a structured, commercially sharp procurement professional with a strong contractual focus who thrives in a fast-moving, international environment. You bring:

  • Around 5 years of relevant experience in a procurement or contract management role, ideally in the energy sector.

  • Experience with renewable energy CAPEX projects is highly valued, whether in BESS, PV, wind or other technologies. [JD1]

  • Solid knowledge of contract frameworks such as FIDIC and VoB/B.

  • Proven ability to negotiate complex contracts on both legal and commercial terms.

  • Comfortable to work in an international project team setting and able to travel on occasion to our other offices or external meetings.

  • A university degree in a relevant field.

  • Fluency in German (native speaker) and English, Dutch is a bonus.

Beyond the procurement and contract skills, you're someone who is results-driven and customer-oriented, a natural team player who can also work independently, entrepreneurial and adaptable in an ever-changing landscape, comfortable travelling internationally and working with suppliers across different cultures and backgrounds.

What We Offer

At Return, you'll be joining a young, ambitious, and close-knit team that's genuinely passionate about accelerating Europe's energy transition. We offer:

  • A dynamic, informal culture where your ideas are heard and valued.

  • Real ownership and room to grow, this isn't a box-ticking role.

  • The chance to make a tangible impact on Europe's renewable energy future.

  • A front-row seat in one of the fastest-growing markets in the energy sector.

  • A competitive salary and benefits package.
