The Trade, Investment and Food Safety Division (TIFS) expands and diversifies Alberta’s food and bio-product manufacturing sector in local and global markets while also providing effective food safety assurance systems.

The Food and Bio-Processing Branch (FBPB) provides scientific and technical expertise, business development services and specialized facilities to support product/process development, scale up and commercialization of food and non-food products for companies serving local, national, and global markets.

In this key position, you’ll support our sanitation processes, uphold rigorous quality standards, and help create a safe, efficient workspace the entire team depends on.

We are looking for a detail-oriented and hands-on Processing Technologist to support the daily functioning of our pilot plant facility. This role plays a key part in maintaining sanitation standards, preparing equipment for operational use, assisting with client processing projects, and helping ensure smooth day-to-day operations. If you enjoy working with a wide range of food processing equipment and value a clean, organized, and safe workspace, this position offers an engaging and varied environment.

Reporting to the Facilities Manager, this newly created position will be critical in providing support to the operations team. The Facility Processing Technologist supports operational activities within a facility that operates between 06:00 and 17:00 daily.

Key Responsibilities

1. Sanitation Program Support
   • Carry out daily sanitation-related tasks including chemical monitoring, inventory tracking, and communication with chemical suppliers.
   • Generate and review sanitation documents, identify and resolve challenges from previous shifts, and confirm accurate activity records.
   • Prepare equipment for sanitation by performing disassembly and pre-wash steps.
   • Maintain sanitation-related documentation, update SSOPs as needed, and communicate changes to contract cleaning personnel.
   • Monitor sanitation equipment and perform basic troubleshooting, function checks, and minor repairs.
   • Organize daily, weekly, monthly and annual sanitation schedules to meet food safety program requirements and CFIA regulatory expectations.
   • Coordinate with maintenance when operational issues arise.
     
     
2. Pilot Plant Project Assistance
   • Assist with planning and setting up pilot plant projects based on client needs and booking schedules.
   • Set up and operate a variety of food processing lines, which may include:
     
     • Baking systems mixing, proofing, baking, packaging.
     • Fruit & vegetable processing cooking, cooling, homogenizing, bottling, packaging.
     • Continuous cooking systems forming, coating, frying, freezing, packaging.
     • Ingredient separation decanting, centrifuging, spray drying.
     • Meat processing grinding, mixing, emulsifying, stuffing, smoking, slicing, packaging.
   • Organize equipment, materials, and supplies required to efficiently run client projects.
   • Support record keeping for processing conditions and ensure food safety, CFIA, HACCP, and CCP requirements are followed.
   • Communicate updates to SOPs and SSOPs to staff.

3 Facility and Equipment Support

• • Assist in organizing storage areas and equipment placement within the pilot plant.
  • Identify equipment issues and report them to maintenance and facility management.
  • Contribute to safe operating procedures related to facility health and safety.
  • Assist with project scheduling and operational planning as needed.

4. Daily Operations Support

• • Provide afternoon coverage on production lines and support during staff breaks or appointments.
  • Assist with line setup, equipment transport, and general facility preparation.
  • Support other facility areas as needed to ensure smooth overall operations.

Qualifications

Minimum Recruitment Standard: Two-year technical diploma in a related field plus six years of direct food processing experience in an industrial setting or related; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

• 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
• 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Additional Must Have Requirements:

• Food processing facility experience.
• Working in a CFIA environment - Solid knowledge of sanitation practices, chemicals, and food safety regulations in federally inspected food processing environments.
• Strong understanding of industry standards and food processing practice.
• Excellent technical comprehension and operation of food processing equipment.

Assets:

• Hands on experience with equipment operations and sanitation.
• Proficient in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) and capable of completing administrative tasks such as purchase orders, email communication, and file management.
• Skilled in creative problem-solving within food processing operations.

Position Information:

• Office located in Leduc at the Food Processing Development Centre (6309 - 45 Street, Leduc, AB T9E 7C5).
• Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week (permanent full time).
• Monday to Friday (08:15 am-16:30 pm).
