KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • May lead an Advisory Group comprising of Technical Service engineers to ensure the technical needs of the refinery are met. Delivers training, and guide development of Refining Engineers assigned to their technology area. Coaches and mentors Technical Service engineers in development of communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate appropriate work relationships. Begin work to become an industry recognized expert and represent Marathon on industry teams and organizations to bring the industry perspective to decisions within MPC.
  • Provides technical assistance and technical resources during all modes of refinery operation – including normal, upset and emergency conditions, turnaround coverage/direction, and startup/shutdown activities. Provide technical guidance related to operating procedures, environmental compliance, and technical aspects of the technology area that is their expertise. Develops, communicates, provides guidance, and supports adoption of corporate and refinery policies and programs. Develops and delivers technical training for Refinery Engineers & Operators in their technology area to improve technical skills across Refining.
  • Advises Technical Service engineers on monitoring process unit health and troubleshooting operating problems such as capacity limitations, product quality issues, corrosion and fouling mechanisms, and equipment failures. Collaborates with other departments and disciplines to develop repair/redesign options to address acute or chronic operating problems. Supports Refinery in the planning and execution phases of projects & turnarounds by recommending selection of Contractors & Licensors for process design, projects or troubleshooting work based on continuous evaluation of the available engineering firms in their technology area. Supports Refinery Projects through new technology evaluation, conceptual design and procedural advice and work as an advisor with Project Teams.
  • Supports Technical Service Engineers in optimization of refinery operations to improve yields, capacities, product quality, reliability, and utilization. Advises Technical Service engineers by developing a Strategic Business Plan for their technology area that Identifies projects and process opportunities to pro-actively improve refinery performance, reliability and profitability.
  • Advises Technical Service engineers in making sound investment decisions with robust economic justification in support of their recommendations, including process improvements, new technology, environmental or safety upgrades, and catalyst/chemical recommendations. Supports Technical Service engineers with the necessary tools and resources to accomplish refinery goals, including engaging consultants and contractors to facilitate resolution of complex issues. Work closely with Refining Management, Refining Asset Development and Business Development to define project business objectives, scope, costs, and associated risks for developing business opportunities and setting investment strategy for the Refining Business Unit.
  • Acts as a liaison between Refinery and the Refining Staff in their technology area. Facilitates annual Technology Group in-person meetings along with monthly conference calls of Technologists, Tech Service engineers and Operations team members to share lessons learned. Provides information through KPIs, performance monitors, and weekly reports to communicate accomplishments and concerns by Technology to refining management. Ensures performance consistency across Technology Areas through monitoring, counseling, and CPVs. Begins to develop alliances with technology licensors and equipment vendors and keep management apprised of the financial performance of these alliances.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering required.

    (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)

  • Fifteen (15) years or more of experience required.
  • Technical and operational expertise in the process technology area.
  • Operations experience including startup, shutdown, optimization and troubleshooting.
