About the role

The Process and Operations Engineer is an operations‑focused, technical development role designed to cultivate future plant leaders across Reworld’s Energy‑from‑Waste (EfW) fleet. Reporting to an Area Manager or Facility Manager, this position combines hands‑on plant operations support, process optimization, performance management, and capital project execution within a highly regulated heavy industrial environment.

This role provides direct exposure to core EfW systems including combustion, steam generation, power production, and environmental controls. The Process and Operations Engineer partners closely with Operations, Maintenance, Regional Engineering, and Corporate Process Engineering teams to drive plant reliability, environmental compliance, and operational excellence.

Through structured development, progressive responsibility, and mentorship from facility and corporate leadership, this role prepares high‑potential engineers for future operations and plant leadership opportunities within Reworld.

Why This Role Is Different

This is not a traditional entry‑level engineering role. It is a structured leadership development position intended to build the next generation of technical operations leaders by integrating:

  • Engineering discipline and analytical rigor
  • Real‑time accountability for plant performance
  • Ownership of operational improvement initiatives
  • Hands‑on capital project leadership
  • Broad cross‑functional exposure across the business

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze combustion performance, steam generation, turbine output, and emissions data to optimize efficiency and ensure environmental compliance.
  • Partner with Operations and Corporate Process Engineering to optimize combustion controls and improve throughput, heat rate, and environmental performance.
  • Audit daily plant performance metrics to identify deviations from operational, reliability, and compliance targets.
  • Investigate operational inefficiencies and drive corrective actions using engineering analysis and root cause methodologies.
  • Support the development, execution, and tracking of the facility Production Action Plan.
  • Support scope development and execution of plant capital improvement projects to enhance safety, reliability, and performance.
  • Interpret Boiler Condition Assessment findings and implement technical recommendations.
  • Provide construction oversight and commissioning support to ensure projects meet design, safety, and performance requirements.
  • Collaborate with operations leadership, regional engineering, and corporate teams to align plant performance and improvement goals.
  • Review and develop technical documentation including P&IDs, electrical single-line diagrams, and control system drawings.
  • Support vendor bid evaluations, specification development, and technical design reviews.
  • Assist in concept development, including mechanical, electrical, and controls calculations.
  • Lead or support weekly production and performance review meetings.
  • Present technical analyses, improvement opportunities, and project updates to facility leadership.
  • Gradually assume increasing ownership of plant performance initiatives and technical decision-making responsibilities.
  • Evaluate plant modification and optimization opportunities using performance data and best practices.
  • Participate in outage inspections, equipment condition assessments, and performance testing activities.
  • Coordinate internal and third-party technical resources.
  • Support replication of successful engineering improvements across the fleet.
  • Manage smaller-scale facility modifications from concept through implementation.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline required.
  • 0–3 years of engineering experience in power generation, heavy industrial, utilities, manufacturing, or similar environments.
  • Internship or co‑op experience supporting plant operations, O&M, or reliability programs preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and data interpretation skills.
  • Working knowledge of thermodynamics, combustion systems, steam generation, and process controls preferred.
  • Ability to analyze performance trends and translate data into practical improvement actions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable presenting to operational and leadership audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, fast‑paced plant environment.
  • Self‑motivated with demonstrated leadership potential and continuous improvement mindset.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Regular on‑site presence in a heavy industrial operating environment.
  • Ability to perform plant walkdowns, climb ladders, access elevated platforms, and work safely around operating equipment.
  • Ability to travel independently to fleet facilities as required.
  • Availability for occasional off‑hours or weekend work to support outages or operational events.
