Job Description

About the role

This permanent full-time role reports to the Production Manager, and focuses on optimising daily plant performance. The Process Engineer works to maximise production, efficiency and uptime while ensuring compliance with process safety, occupational health and safety, and environmental requirements.

The role involves monitoring plant performance, troubleshooting process issues, and working closely with Operations, Maintenance and other departments to ensure the plant operates within defined limits and meets Yara, site and regulatory standards. The role also supports continuous improvement, project delivery, graduate development and production reporting.

What you’ll do day-to-day

  • Monitor and optimise plant performance, production losses and reliability
  • Analyse process and laboratory data and recommend operational improvements
  • Support HESQ requirements, including environmental reporting and safety audits
  • Lead or support plant improvement and production-related projects, including CAPEX
  • Review operating parameters and quality results to identify and resolve issues
  • Work closely with operators, maintenance and site engineers to support safe, efficient operations

About you

  • Degree (Honours or higher) in Chemical or Process Engineering
  • 5–10 years’ experience in the chemical or petrochemical industry, ideally within Nitric Acid or Ammonium Nitrate processing plants
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot and optimise plant performance
  • Clear and confident communicator, able to work effectively with operations and technical teams
  • Proactive, self‑driven and comfortable working in a team‑based environment
  • Proficient in standard engineering and reporting tools (e.g. Microsoft Office; process simulation software desirable)
  • Experience in oil and gas, chemical processing and manufacturing processes
  • Fluent English (verbal and written) is essential.
  • Australian/New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency.

Yara Pilbara is part of Yara International, a global crop nutrition company. The Pilbara site is one of the world’s largest ammonia production facilities, with downstream processing through the Yara Pilbara Nitrates Technical Ammonium Nitrate plant, a joint venture with Orica. Together with ENGIE, Yara Pilbara is also developing a renewable hydrogen plant to produce renewable ammonia.
