
Vertex is seeking a talented and motivated Scientist to join our Process Development team. The Process Development Engineering Scientist will lead projects focused on process development, optimization, and characterization of cell therapy products for current and future programs. This role involves hands-on work with large-scale bioreactors (50L and above) and will focus on developing scalable media and bioreactor processes to advance our Type 1 Diabetes program.
Design and execute experiments to develop robust manufacturing processes for cell therapy products and support programs in clinical development.
Develop robust, scalable media and bioreactor processes for cell therapy manufacturing.
Evaluate novel and emerging technologies to advance project strategies.
Lead projects within the team and provide training and support to scientists and engineers in large-scale bioprocessing and media scale-up.
Apply deep knowledge of cell culture, bioreactor operations, and scale-up principles to process development activities.
Use scientific and engineering fundamentals to support process design, development, and process understanding.
Apply statistical tools and design of experiments (DOE) to guide process optimization.
Develop process development and optimization strategies for 50L scale and beyond.
Drive development activities in a cross-functional team environment.
Author and review batch records, technical reports, and supporting documentation.
Troubleshoot and resolve process challenges through the application of technical expertise and scientific judgment.
Troubleshoot process and equipment-related issues and apply a strong understanding of large-scale bioprocessing equipment to support operations.
Experience in large-scale bioprocessing, including operation of 50L and above bioreactors.
Strong understanding of large-scale bioprocessing equipment and demonstrated ability to troubleshoot equipment and process issues.
Strong background in design of experiments (DOE) and statistical analysis.
Strong understanding of cell culture processes and bioreactor scale-up.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical and scientific information clearly.
Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet timelines, and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biochemistry, Biology, or a related field with 6–8 years of relevant experience, or Master’s degree with 4–6 years of relevant experience, or PhD with 0–3 years of relevant experience.
Pay Range:
$104,000 - $156,000

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
