About the position
The Process Design Engineer : The Specialty Operations Biodiesel and Renewable Diesel Process Design Engineer will be a member of the Facilities Process Engineering organization at Chevron ENGINE. This role is responsible for delivering process design and engineering support across biodiesel and renewable diesel assets, with an emphasis on safe, reliable, and operable process designs for brownfield modifications and greenfield projects. The Process Design Engineer will work closely with Operations, Projects, Process Engineering, Control Systems, Mechanical Engineering, and Maintenance to develop design deliverables that meet business, safety, regulatory, and operational requirements. Engineers will interface directly with Chevron biodiesel and renewable diesel assets and project teams to provide technical ownership and process design expertise throughout the project lifecycle.
Chevron ENGINE supports global operations, and work hours are aligned to business needs. Standard working hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM or 1:30 PM to 10:30 PM, Monday to Friday. These may evolve based on operational or business requirements.
Key responsibilities
Develop and deliver process design basis/data, process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), heat and material balances, and other core process design deliverables supporting biodiesel and renewable diesel facilities.
Apply process engineering principles to generate safe, reliable, and cost-effective designs for biodiesel and renewable diesel projects, including feedstock pretreatment, reaction systems, separation, treating, and product upgrading.
Provide input to process design criteria, technology selection, and equipment specifications specific to renewable fuels processing technologies.
Develop and maintain steady state and dynamic process simulation models to support process design, debottlenecking, capacity expansion, and operating scenario evaluations and trouble shooting.
Partner with Operations and Maintenance to ensure designs are practical, operable, and aligned with site standards, operating practices, and lifecycle requirements.
Participate in and support process safety activities including HAZOPs, design reviews, and risk assessments to ensure compliance with Chevron process safety requirements.
Support project execution through detailed design reviews, technical queries, and resolution of process related issues.
Provide technical support during commissioning, startup, and early operations to ensure successful implementation and stable operation of biodiesel and renewable diesel units.
Identify process design improvement opportunities to enhance reliability, safety, energy efficiency, yields, and maintainability.
Support Management of Change (MOC) activities with appropriate technical documentation and engineering justification.
Collaborate across disciplines to ensure integration of process design with mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, control systems, and utilities designs.
Evaluate and support Pressure Safety Valve (PSV) and relief systems analysis.

Required Qualifications
5–10 years of process engineering and process design experience within renewable fuels, petroleum refining, specialty chemicals, or related process industries.
Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, or equivalent, from an appropriately accredited university.
Proficiency with process simulation tools such as Pro II and/or Aspen HYSYS.
Proficiency with iPRSM PSV/relief system calculations & database.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting biodiesel, renewable diesel, or other alternative or low carbon fuels facilities.
Experience with batch, semi batch, and continuous process units involving reaction, separation, and treating systems.
Strong knowledge of process design practices, deliverables, and project execution phases.
Familiarity with ASME, API, and applicable industry codes and standards.
Working knowledge of HAZOP facilitation, process safety analysis, and root cause analysis.
Experience supporting brownfield projects and operating facilities.
Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively across functional teams and with asset stakeholders.
Experience and working knowledge with relief system calculations and standards, i.e. API 520, API 521, ASME Sec VIII, Chevron FRS-DU-5056, and FRS-DU-5057.
