Process Automation Segment Engineer
This is a full time, exempt position

Location
This position is based onsite, with a preference for Des Moines, IA; Quincy, IL; Decatur, IL; or Lincoln, NE. We are open to considering other U.S. ADM locations at the hiring manager’s discretion. If role requirements are met and relocation is deemed necessary, this position is eligible for relocation assistance.

The Process Automation Segment Engineer is responsible for providing technical support and leadership for process automation systems across the Segment to ensure operational success. This role focuses on delivering guidance, troubleshooting, and implementing standard work practices to maintain and enhance automation system performance. The engineer will collaborate with business unit leadership, Technology Centers, and project teams to execute automation initiatives in alignment with global standards and corporate objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide Segment-level support for process automation systems to ensure reliable and efficient operations.
  • Collaborate with business unit and Technology Center teams to plan, execute, and commission automation projects in accordance with global engineering and safety standards.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for process automation that reduce operational risk, improve efficiency, and drive optimization.
  • Develop, maintain, and advance standardization and documentation for process automation systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve automation system issues, ensuring minimal impact on production and operational continuity.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and contribute to the culture of Performance Excellence.
  • Promote and uphold safety standards by integrating automation solutions that enhance workplace safety and operational reliability.
  • Serve as a technical resource and subject matter expert for process automation technologies.

Job Requirements
Safety and Compliance

  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of and accountability for full compliance with all safety, environmental, and health (EHS) requirements.
  • Promotes and maintains a safe working environment through adherence to company policies and regulatory standards.

Technical Expertise

  • Maintains comprehensive knowledge of production processes, equipment, and operations to support the development, improvement, and maintenance of process and safety interlocks.
  • Designs, develops, and modifies process automation controls to achieve desired operational performance and reliability.
  • Troubleshoots automation systems to identify and resolve hardware and software deficiencies, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
  • Develops and maintains accurate documentation for process automation hardware, software, and control systems.
  • Demonstrates awareness of cybersecurity fundamentals and applies secure practices in automation system design and maintenance.

Qualification

  • Currently possess an Engineer III title or will obtain Engineer III title within 12 months of accepting position.

Leadership and Collaboration

  • Works effectively both independently and collaboratively to achieve PA & OT Technology Center, business unit, and Segment goals.
  • Leads discussions on automation performance, providing clear communication of progress, challenges, and innovative solutions to enhance system reliability and efficiency.
  • Identifies successful automation strategies implemented across various sites and develops plans to replicate and scale these solutions throughout the business unit.
  • Provides coaching, mentorship, and technical development for colleagues to build team capability and performance.
  • Manages third-party suppliers and contractors as required, ensuring quality and compliance with project specifications.
  • Active participation on a Global PA & OT team.

Professional Development

  • Pursues and maintains industry-specific training and certifications relevant to process automation and career advancement.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements

  • Capable of working in extreme temperatures and physically demanding conditions, including climbing stairs, lifting and moving up to 40 pounds, and working in confined spaces or at heights.
  • Must be available for on-call rotation, including off-hours, holiday, and weekend coverage as needed.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% for company business.

Preferred Experience and Education
Education:

  • Minimum of an Associate’s degree in a technical discipline.
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Electrical, Computer, or Automation Engineering is strongly preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in process control within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience with Distributed Control Systems (DCS) or Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems; familiarity with Rockwell Automation PlantPAx or Aveva (Wonderware) InTouch platforms preferred.
  • Practical experience with industrial I/O platforms, preferably Rockwell or Modicon systems.
  • Working knowledge of data historian systems, such as OSIsoft PI, for Process data collection and analysis.
  • Familiarity with industrial communication networks, including Ethernet, TCP/IP, Modbus, and related protocols.
  • Solid understanding of industrial process control principles, including instrumentation, AC/DC electrical systems, and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Proven ability to remotely troubleshoot process control systems, collaborating effectively with on-site teams to diagnose and resolve issues while maintaining safe operations.
  • Demonstrated capability to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain process control systems, working safely with and around AC and DC voltages up to 120V.

Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Hourly and salaried non-exempt employees will also be paid overtime pay when working qualifying overtime hours.

If hired, employees will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base pay (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.

The pay range for this position is expected to be between:

$102,100.00 - $180,000.00

Salaried Incentive Plan

The total compensation package for this position will also include annual bonus and a long-term incentive plan
