Purpose of the job:

In liaison with the Regional Manager APAC, the Process Automation Engineer will be responsible for implementing, and providing support to use automation systems to enhance the efficiency, safety, and reliability of the bioethanol production processes.

This is a new role created within Leaf APAC team to contribute to the development & deployment of a new fermentation of excellence digital tool in India

This role requires a background in process control and, instrumentation. Expertise in engineering programming, along with experience in bioethanol production processes or industrial fermentation processes is considered a plus.

Key responsibilities:

1) Automation duties

  • Process automation Assessment: Assess each bioethanol plant automation infrastructure, instrumentation availability & personnel training, using well established tools & documentation.
  • Basic Knowledge of OPC communication (OPC-DA & OPC-UA)
  • Support to implantation on site of the solution with IT/AT considerations. Utilization of the Data Logger/Data Historian. Ensure good understanding of PLC & DCS systems to do basic configuration.
  • Develop innovative & efficient solutions to digitalize, connect & extract fermentation lab data to the data base for analysis.
  • Work together with Regional Manager, Technical Service Representative & Industrial Fermentation manager to design optimum dashboard for efficient visualization & actions.
  • Instrumentation Selection and Integration: Select appropriate instrumentation and sensors for monitoring key process variables and integrate them into the automation system for accurate process control and optimization.
  • Process Optimization: Analyze process data and performance metrics to identify opportunities for optimization, such as improving yield, reducing energy consumption, and minimizing waste generation.
  • Fault Diagnosis and Resolution: Diagnose and report automation-related issues and recommend corrective actions to minimize downtime and ensure the continuous operation of production processes.
  • Documentation and Training: Provide training to operations and maintenance personnel on the use and maintenance of Leaf’s digital fermentation solution.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay abreast of advancements in automation technology and industry best practices, and proactively identify opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement in bioethanol production processes.

2) Technical Service

  • Assist Technical Service Representative to deploy the fermentation center of excellence digital tools at key selected accounts. Ensure a fast & efficient deployment to allow valuable data & recommendations for Technical Service Representatives to create value.

3) Others

  • Other duties may be assigned. Specific projects &/or assignment can be assigned when needed.

Qualifications

Must skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in process automation, preferably in the bioethanol or similar process industries.
  • Proficiency in programming PLCs and DCS systems.
  • Strong understanding of process control principles, including PID control, cascade control, and advanced control strategies.
  • Experience with SCADA software and HMI development.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation technologies, including flow meters, pressure transmitters, temperature sensors, etc.
  • Familiarity with safety instrumented systems (SIS) and functional safety standards (e.g., IEC 61511).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with data analytics and predictive maintenance techniques.
  • Familiarity with process simulation software.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy and biofuel production processes.
  • Certification in relevant automation technologies (e.g., ISA Certified Automation Professional).

Additional Information

Scope of the position: INDIA & APAC

Based office in Mumbai or Home office

>50% of the time travel in India & occasionally overseas.
