Reports to: Managing Director of Legal Services
Overview: The Door is an unparalleled model for youth development, offering a comprehensive range of integrated services within a single site for nearly eleven thousand New York City youth each year. Our mission is to empower young adults to reach their full potential by providing comprehensive youth development services in a diverse and caring environment. At The Door, youth can access health care and education, mental health counseling and crisis assistance, legal assistance, college preparation services, career development, housing supports, arts, sports and recreational activities, and nutritious meals – all for free and under one roof. By providing participants with our suite of integrated services, we seek to provide any motivated young person with the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to successfully transition to adulthood.
The Door's Legal Services Center provides cutting-edge advocacy to young people ages 12-24. We are a team of nearly 40, including attorneys, social workers, paralegals, and administrative assistants. In particular, we are known for our work defending the rights of undocumented youth.  We are looking for a Pro Bono Managing Attorney to grow The Door's partnerships with the private bar and to promote awareness of our work. The Attorney will deepen our existing relationships with law firms and will recruit new law firm partners and will play an entrepreneurial role in creating new models and networks to enhance access to justice for low-income youth. The Attorney will also maintain a small immigration caseload and may be asked to supervise fellows and/or junior staff attorneys.
Responsibilities:
Grow The Door's relationships with law firms and corporate counsel.
Recruit, train, and mentor volunteer attorneys, with a focus on immigration representation
Partner with law firms to hold intake clinics and know-your-rights events
Match clients with volunteer attorneys
Maintain a small immigration caseload
Represent The Door in local and national advocacy efforts
Participate in conferences, meetings, and trainings
Develop and maintain updated guidance materials, sample filings, and legal training presentations
Supervise and mentor junior staff attorneys and law student interns
Work closely with the Director to secure broader support from partner law firms for the Legal Services Center
Other responsibilities as assigned by the Director
Qualifications:
J.D. degree and admission to New York State Bar or willingness to sit for next available exam
A minimum of 5 years of experience in immigration law
Knowledge of and ability to apply positive youth development principles to working with young people
Experience in supervision, project management, fundraising and stewarding relationships
Understanding of private law firm and corporate pro bono culture
Experience with federal and appellate practice preferred
Proficiency in Spanish, French or Chinese preferred but not required
Hours: Monday - Friday - 35 hours a week
Salary: $110,000 - $122,000 annually
