Job Description

Inserts and monitors peripherally placed central venous (PICC), mid-line, peripheral intravenous (IV) catheters. Acts as a resource and consultant for staff with regard to IV therapy assessment, products and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains competencies in the field
  • Obtain ongoing education related to management of vascular access devices.
  • Inserts PICC line and mid-line catheters, determines placement via Xray follow-up and documents procedure.
  • Assist staff by monitoring PICC and mid-lines, declotting, performing dressing changes when needed, and discontinuing catheters.
  • Assist with difficult peripheral IV insertions.
  • Plans evaluated, and implements interventions for solving IV related patient care problems.
  • Provides IV instruction and/or information to nursing staff, students, physicians, patients and their families.
  • Participates in research and quality improvement studies related to IV therapy.
  • Maintains an on-going logbook of PICC insertion data.
  • Keeps current on advances in IV therapy.
  • Performs initial and annual RN competency. Recommended training ACLS.
  • Attends an educational course including theoretical components and hands on practicum with clinical supervision conducted by a competent nurse expert in the field of vascular access device insertion. This course includes: anatomy, physiology, care and maintenance, pharmacology, patient education, patient selection, emergency and non-emergency complication management, sterile technique, insertion with ultrasound, quality assurance management, and data collection.
  • Initial clinical competency is assessed by a competent, qualified, and knowledgeable RN observing 5 successful insertions.
  • Annual clinical competency is assessment by a competent, qualified, and knowledgeable RN by observing 1 successful insertion. In addition the RN must:
  • Must maintain competency by inserting several PICCs each month.
  • Participate and review performance improvement data, review of manufacturer information, and evidence based practice.

    Qualifications

    • Current Alabama RN licensure.
    • Two years or clinical experience.
    • Must have demonstrated competency and proficiency in intravenous therapy.
    • Professional Infusion Nursing certification preferred.
    • Demonstrated positive relationship with co-workers and effective communication skills.
    • Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
