PRN Histotechnician (HT/HTL ASCP) - Tampa, FL

We are seeking a PRN Florida-licensed Histotechnician (HT/HTL ASCP) to join our dermatopathology laboratory in Tampa, Florida (Academic Alliance in Dermatology). This position provides as-needed support during periods of increased laboratory volume, staff PTO, and unexpected absences. Hours are not guaranteed and will vary based on laboratory needs.

Florida Clinical Laboratory Technologist License in Histology is required.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Laboratory Director, the Histotechnician is responsible for specimen processing, tissue preparation, slide production, quality control, and maintenance of laboratory records. The Histotechnician follows established laboratory procedures and ensures the accurate and timely preparation of high-quality histology slides for diagnostic review.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Histology Processing

Perform all technical procedures related to the preparation of tissue specimens and production of slides while maintaining the highest standards of quality, including:

  • Accurate accessioning of cases into the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
  • Dissection of skin and excisional specimens following established grossing protocols
  • Tissue processing and embedding
  • Microtomy and sectioning of paraffin blocks
  • Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining
  • Slide preparation and coverslipping
  • Quality control and troubleshooting as needed

Special Stains

Perform all technical procedures related to Special Stain processing, including:

  • Operating Special Stain instrumentation
  • Ensuring equipment is functioning properly and producing high-quality slides
  • Validating staining kits and procedures
  • Validating and maintaining Special Stain controls
  • Maintaining quality control systems for the Special Stains department

Immunohistochemistry (IHC)

Perform all technical procedures related to Immunohistochemistry (IHC), including:

  • Operating IHC staining instrumentation
  • Ensuring proper equipment function and slide quality
  • Validating antibodies and staining procedures
  • Validating and maintaining IHC controls
  • Maintaining quality control systems specific to IHC
  • Assisting with inventory management of antibodies and reagents

Additional Responsibilities

  • Maintain compliance with CLIA, CAP, OSHA, and laboratory policies and procedures
  • Assist with laboratory quality assurance initiatives
  • Maintain accurate documentation and records
  • Communicate effectively with pathologists, physicians, laboratory leadership, and team members
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) certification required
  • Florida Clinical Laboratory Technologist License in Histology required
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a histology laboratory performing:
    • Fixation
    • Specimen processing
    • Embedding
    • Microtomy
    • Reagent preparation
  • Experience with Special Stains and Immunohistochemistry (IHC) preferred
  • Dermatopathology experience preferred

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge and skills consistent with an accredited Histotechnology program
  • If hired into a Mohs laboratory, must meet CLIA requirements for high-complexity testing personnel
  • Knowledge of histology laboratory procedures, equipment, and quality control practices
  • Ability to manage a high volume of work while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
  • Basic computer proficiency
  • Ability to read and interpret laboratory procedures, manuals, and protocols
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods while performing laboratory procedures
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers for laboratory tasks and microtomy
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Ability to work safely around laboratory chemicals and equipment
  • Prolonged periods of sitting and computer work as needed

Licensure/Certifications/Education

PRN employees are generally not eligible for company benefits. To maintain PRN status, employees must work a minimum of two (2) shifts per month.
