This position requires a skilled Principal Technician (Digital Infrastructure) to lead the design, integration, and operational support of enterprise IT infrastructure. In this technically hands-on role, the successful candidate will manage the full lifecycle of infrastructure services—from systems design and integration build to administration, monitoring, and maintenance.
Responsibilities:
1. Systems design
Follows standard approaches and established design patterns to create new designs for simple systems or system components.
Identifies and resolves minor design issues.
Identifies alternative design options and seeks guidance when deviating from established design patterns.
2. Systems integration and build
Provides technical expertise to enable the configuration of system components and equipment for systems testing.
Collaborates with technical teams to develop and agree system integration plans and report on progress.
Defines complex/new integration builds.
Ensures that integration test environments are correctly configured.
Designs, performs and reports results of tests of the integration build.
Identifies and documents system integration components for recording in the configuration management system.
Recommends and implements improvements to processes and tools.
3. IT infrastructure
Provisions/installs, configures and maintains infrastructure services and components.
Monitors, measures and reports on infrastructure load, performance and security events.
Identifies operational issues and contributes to their resolution.
Carries out agreed operational procedures, including backup/restore, using supplied infrastructure tools and scripts.
Carries out agreed system software maintenance tasks.
Automates routine system administration tasks to specifications using standard tools and basic scripting.
4. Storage management
Performs regular high-performance, scalable backups and restores on a schedule and tracks offsite storage.
Implements documented configurations for allocation of storage, installation and maintenance of secure storage systems using the agreed operational procedures.
Identifies operational problems and contributes to their resolution.
Uses standard management and reporting tools to collect and report on storage utilisation, performance and backup statistics.
Qualifications & Experience:
Demonstrated experience in the installation, configuration, administration, maintenance and support of enterprise IT infrastructure, including servers, storage systems, virtualization platforms and cloud services.
Strong knowledge of Microsoft server technologies and core infrastructure services, including Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP and identity and access management solutions.
Proven experience administering and supporting Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environments, including deployment, configuration, performance optimization and troubleshooting.
Experience managing VMware technologies, including vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, Horizon or equivalent virtualization and desktop virtualization platforms.
Sound understanding of enterprise storage technologies, backup and recovery solutions, data protection mechanisms and disaster recovery processes.
Experience monitoring infrastructure performance, capacity, availability and security events and implementing corrective actions to maintain service reliability.
Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex infrastructure, system integration and operational issues.
Experience planning, executing and supporting infrastructure integration, testing, deployment and operational acceptance activities.
Knowledge of IT security principles, infrastructure hardening, vulnerability management, patch management and secure system administration practices.
Experience automating routine administrative and operational tasks using scripting languages and automation tools such as PowerShell or equivalent technologies.
Ability to develop and maintain technical documentation, standard operating procedures, configuration records and infrastructure support documentation.
Experience working within highly available, mission-critical or enterprise-scale environments requiring high levels of reliability, resilience and operational continuity.
Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary technical teams, stakeholders, vendors and service providers to deliver infrastructure services and projects.
Strong communication, interpersonal and Customer oriented skills with the ability to provide technical guidance and knowledge transfer to team members and users.
Relevant professional certifications in Microsoft, VMware, cloud technologies or related infrastructure disciplines are highly desirable.
