About the Opportunity

This is not a remote role. The successful candidate must be physically based in New York, USA and available to attend the office during normal working hours.

The organisation is building the next generation of payments, identity and financial technology solutions and is seeking ambitious individuals who want to play a meaningful role in shaping the future of the business.

As part of this next phase of growth, our client is seeking a Principal Software Engineer - Identity & FinCrime to take ownership of identity verification, authentication and fraud prevention capabilities across the platform.

This is not a traditional corporate engineering role.

They are not simply looking for candidates with impressive company names on their CVs. They are seeking builders, operators and problem-solvers who thrive in fast-paced environments, take ownership without being asked, move quickly, execute effectively and have a proven track record of delivering meaningful outcomes.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, working closely with founders and senior leadership, and helping build scalable technology to support significant future growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own and help evolve the organisation's identity verification and fraud prevention capabilities
  • Support the continued development of secure, scalable and reliable authentication systems
  • Contribute to improvements across onboarding, identity verification and customer approval journeys
  • Help identify opportunities to reduce fraud, improve customer experience and increase operational efficiency
  • Support the evaluation, implementation and optimisation of identity-related technologies and processes
  • Work closely with engineering, product and leadership teams to deliver strategic objectives
  • Contribute to the development of authentication, verification and fraud prevention solutions
  • Help improve the accuracy, efficiency and effectiveness of customer verification processes
  • Support the ongoing development of secure customer identity and authentication frameworks
  • Analyse risks, trends and opportunities relating to fraud, identity and verification systems
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to improve customer onboarding and verification outcomes
  • Promote a culture of accountability, ownership and continuous improvement

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • 3+ years of experience working with identity verification, KYC, authentication, fraud prevention or related technologies
  • Strong experience working within fintech, payments, banking, digital identity or other regulated financial services environments
  • Demonstrated experience supporting or developing customer verification and authentication systems
  • Strong understanding of fraud prevention, identity verification and customer onboarding principles
  • Familiarity with KYC, AML and financial services compliance environments
  • Experience working within startup, scale-up or high-growth technology environments
  • Proven ability to operate effectively in fast-moving and evolving organisations
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical capabilities
  • Comfortable balancing strategic thinking with hands-on execution
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience with authentication technologies, fraud tooling, risk systems, identity platforms or customer onboarding solutions is highly desirable
  • Demonstrated ownership mentality with a track record of delivering results
  • A builder mindset with the ambition to grow alongside a rapidly scaling business
