Principal Engineer – Cloud & Terraform (Infrastructure as Code)

Reporting to: Engineering Manager / Technical Engineering Manager

We are looking for a Principal Engineer (Cloud & Terraform) to provide senior technical leadership in designing, building and operating secure, scalable cloud platforms using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) This role is pivotal in shaping cloud foundations, enabling engineering teams through standardised platforms, reusable Terraform modules and automation-led governance. You will influence architecture, standards and engineering practices across teams while mentoring engineers and driving engineering excellence.

Key Responsibilities

• Own and lead the design and evolution of cloud platforms and landing zones using Terraform and cloud‑native services.
• Take technical responsibility across the full lifecycle: design, build, test, deploy and operate cloud infrastructure.
• Define and enforce IaC standards, reusable module patterns, quality gates and security controls.
• Drive adoption of automation, CI/CD and policy-as-code to ensure compliant, repeatable and auditable environments.
• Partner with Engineering, Architecture, Security and Product stakeholders to align cloud platforms with business and regulatory needs.
• Promote engineering excellence through reviews, mentoring, documentation and continuous improvement.
• Influence technical roadmaps, reduce cloud and platform technical debt, and improve operational resilience.

Essential Skills & Experience

• 12–15 years of engineering experience with strong depth in cloud platform engineering for SaaS or product-led organisations.
• Expert-level experience with Terraform (modules, state management, versioning, pipelines, testing and governance).
• Strong hands-on experience with Azure and/or AWS including networking, identity, security, governance and shared services.
• Experience building and operating CI/CD pipelines for IaC (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, Jenkins).
• Strong understanding of cloud security, IAM, secrets management and compliance-by-design.
• Proven ability to influence technical direction, mentor senior engineers and work across multiple teams.

Nice to Have

• Experience in regulated domains such as Financial Services
• Exposure to Kubernetes/platform engineering, observability and FinOps practices.
• Experience building internal developer platforms or self-service cloud capabilities.

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related discipline (post‑graduate qualifications are a plus).
