Job Description
Principal Performance & Scale Engineer
π Location: Hyderabad π’ Work Arrangement: Hybrid β 2 days per week in the office
About the Role
We're looking for a technically exceptional and strategically minded Principal Performance & Scale Engineer to define and own Hyland's organization-wide approach to performance engineering. In this role, you'll set the standard for how we benchmark, test, and validate platform behavior at scale β building the systems, pipelines, and practices that ensure our enterprise platforms perform reliably under real-world, production-representative conditions.
You'll work across engineering, product, and SRE teams to establish performance SLOs, architect CI/CD-integrated benchmark pipelines, lead multi-billion-scale load campaigns, and close the loop between test environments and live production telemetry. You'll also push the frontier of AI workload benchmarking β evaluating inference latency, model-serving throughput, and resource consumption as Hyland's platforms become increasingly AI-first. If you're energized by building things that last, influencing teams through credibility, and turning complex performance data into decisions that matter β we'd love to connect.
Your Role Responsibilities? Here's What You'll Do.
- Define and own the organization-wide performance testing strategy β unified tools, scenarios, datasets, and metrics adopted consistently across every engineering team; establish performance SLOs jointly with Product and SRE, tracking and driving measurable improvements every release cycle.
- Architect CI/CD-integrated benchmark pipelines with automated regression detection, ensuring regressions are triaged and actionable within hours β never discovered at release time; publish and maintain living performance baselines including throughput targets, latency budgets, and scalability envelopes per component, visible across the organization.
- Lead multi-billion-scale benchmark campaigns that validate platform behavior under production-representative workloads, directly informing engineering decisions and customer-facing guidance; close the loop between benchmarks and production by ensuring live telemetry continuously feeds back into the test suite.
- Develop and execute AI workload benchmarking strategies β covering inference latency, model-serving throughput, and resource consumption under load β and leverage ML/AI for anomaly detection, predictive capacity planning, and intelligent test generation.
- Design and validate multi-tenant performance isolation β including fair resource allocation, noisy-neighbor mitigation, and per-tenant SLO adherence at scale; partner with feature teams during design reviews to surface scalability risks before code is written and define test plans that validate every significant change.
- Coach engineers across the organization on profiling, load generation, and building diagnosable systems β raising the performance engineering bar org-wide and aligning multiple engineering teams on shared tools and metrics through influence, not authority.
Technology Tools
- Performance Testing: Gatling, JMeter & k6 (or similar)
- Cloud Platforms: AWS, GCP & Azure
- Container & Orchestration: Kubernetes & Terraform
- Observability: Prometheus & Grafana
- CI/CD Pipelines & Automated Regression Detection
- AI/ML Workload & Benchmarking Tools
- Distributed System Profiling & Tracing Tools
Role Essentials
- 10+ years in performance engineering with hands-on expertise in Gatling, JMeter, k6, or similar tools; deep experience in distributed-system profiling, tuning, and capacity planning at enterprise scale.
- Proven experience running large-scale benchmarks at multi-billion-record or comparable scale β reproducibly β with a track record of delivering actionable, low-noise results that directly inform product and engineering decisions.
- Deep CI/CD integration expertise with experience building low-noise pipelines, automated regression detection, and ensuring performance results are actionable and triaged within hours β not days.
- Demonstrated track record of aligning multiple engineering teams on shared tools and metrics through influence, not authority; strong ability to operate cross-functionally and drive org-wide adoption of performance standards and practices.
- Ability to translate p95 latencies and throughput curves into decisions that product managers, executives, and customers can act on β bridging the gap between complex technical performance data and meaningful business outcomes.
What We'd Like to See
- AI/ML workload benchmarking experience β including inference performance, GPU utilization, and serving-system scalability within enterprise AI environments.
- Multi-tenant architecture experience with hands-on performance isolation validation, noisy-neighbor mitigation, and per-tenant SLO enforcement at scale.
- SRE background with collaborative SLO definition and defense β bridging performance engineering and site reliability practices across engineering organizations.
- Cloud-native stack expertise across Kubernetes, AWS/GCP/Azure, Terraform, Prometheus, and Grafana for scalable, observable, and resilient performance testing infrastructure.
- Experience developing and maintaining living performance documentation β including baselines, runbooks, and scalability envelopes β that enable engineering and product teams to make confident, data-driven decisions.
