Northrop Grumman is seeking a Principal Microelectronics Engineer to support Surface Mount Technology Manual Assembly for Space Programs at our Space and Autoline Technology (SALT) facility in Elkridge Maryland.

The Principal Microelectronics Engineer will join Northrop Grumman’s Manufacturing organization and support the Space Manual manufacturing cell. In this fast‑paced environment, the engineer will collaborate with multiple disciplines and focus on manual processes used to build Circuit Card Assemblies (CCAs) and Electronic Component Assemblies (ECAs). The Principal Microelectronics Engineer has responsibilities that include, but are not limited to:

Factory and Hardware Support:

  • Collaborating with operations team to identify and implement improvements.
  • Engaging directly with floor operations, addressing real-time challenges.
  • Investigating suspected non-conforming hardware, determining a path forward for rework or repair and providing initial root causes for manufacturing related defects.
  • Developing and/or revising process documentation and manufacturing work instructions.
  • Assisting with the training of new personnel and participating in the design of operator training materials.

Process Support & Development:

  • Developing new and maintaining or improving existing manufacturing processes with a focus on quality, efficiency, and affordability.
  • Leverage data to develop actionable insights and recommend improvements.
  • Developing methods for process monitoring using existing and new interfaces.
  • Creating, validating, and maintaining equipment. Conducting Production Readiness Reviews (PRRs) to validate new processes for the production cell.

Design Support:

  • Recommending product design improvements required to produce advanced microelectronics products
  • Documenting state-of-the-art process capabilities and guidelines for product designers
  • Participating in design producibility reviews for new products.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or related STEM area and a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience (or a minimum of 3 years with an MS). Candidates with a high school diploma and a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience or an Associate's degree and a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience will be considered.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment.
  • Fluency in MS Office software applications.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Level Security Clearance is required.
  • US Citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with CCA and ECA manufacturing technologies, specifically manual processes. Familiarity with Space Class hardware (CCA and ECA) manual rework and repair processes.
  • Experience with J-STD, MIL-STD requirements and Space Class hardware requirements, including AS9100, J-STD-001, IPC-A-610.
  • Experience with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.

Primary Level Salary Range: $108,800.00 - $163,200.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
