Job Description

Principal Mechanical Engineer

This role is central to advancing engineering excellence at Sedgman. You will plan, coordinate and lead complex design assignments, ensuring technical rigour and high-quality outcomes. With a focus on shaping engineering standards and specifications, you will play a pivotal role in resolving challenging technical issues, enhancing design processes, and ensuring our projects consistently meet and exceed the expectations of our clients and the broader industry.

Accountabilities - Job Specific

  • Support Project Development activities through the concept setting and review process.
  • C ommunicate effectively with existing and prospective clients to ensure their needs and expectations are met.
  • Maintain strong industry networks and build new relationships as the sector evolves.
  • Work with management to review complex design issues and support client negotiations.
  • Prepare technical documentation, RFQs, and technical literature as required.

Design Management - Leadership

  • Lead and guide the design team to achieve quality, schedule and commercial outcomes.
  • Oversee feasibility studies, surveys, design layouts, system diagrams, specifications, BoQs, materials lists and cost estimates.
  • Plan workloads and provide technical and administrative direction to project personnel.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines to ensure integrated project delivery.
  • Monitor and evaluate engineers’ and drafters’ performance and technical competency.
  • Ensure all design documentation meets project and client requirements.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by closing out NCRs promptly.

Design Management - Technical

  • Define or approve design methods, specifications and performance requirements for new projects.
  • Resolve technically complex design challenges and work with engineering management on policy or resourcing issues.
  • Review, update and maintain standard drawings and Sedgman’s engineering specifications to align with industry best practice.

Quality Management

  • Contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of the Quality Management System.
  • Apply Sedgman specifications, standard drawings, simulations and calculations in line with current industry standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Engineering in relevant discipline.
  • P.Eng accreditation (as required by region).

Essential knowledge and experience

  • Minimum 15 years’ experience in a design, consultancy or operational engineering role.
  • Strong background in the mining and mineral processing sector.
  • Strong technical understanding and competence in piping design and layout within mining and mineral processing environments.

  • Proven experience leading and managing technical/project teams.

Desired Experience

  • Project management experience.
  • Strong capability in MS Office, MS Access and MS Project.
