Principal Mapping Designer – Pipeline Systems

Play an integral role in Worley’s Pipeline Systems team, helping deliver the critical infrastructure that supports energy, chemicals, resources, and emerging energy markets. As the demand for reliable and sustainable pipeline infrastructure continues to evolve, you will provide technical leadership and mapping expertise that supports the successful planning, design, and execution of complex pipeline projects across North America.

Purpose of the role

As a Principal Mapping Designer – Pipeline Systems, you will serve as a senior technical leader and Subject Matter Expert (SME) responsible for delivering high-quality pipeline mapping and design solutions across upstream, midstream, and distribution projects. You will oversee the technical integrity, constructability, and quality of mapping deliverables while providing leadership, mentorship, and guidance to designers and multidisciplinary project teams.

You will play a key role in project execution by supporting route selection, design development, customer engagement, scope definition, and project delivery. Through your expertise in pipeline mapping technologies, geospatial data, and design best practices, you will contribute to safe, efficient, and sustainable project outcomes that align with customer objectives and Worley’s commitment to operational excellence.

Location: Denver, Colorado

This position will be based in Denver and will support a hybrid work environment, providing opportunities for office collaboration, customer engagement, and occasional field activities to support project execution and validate engineering and design solutions.

You will be responsible for

  • Serving as the Design Manager and technical lead for large-scale pipeline projects while overseeing mapping scope, quality, schedule, and delivery performance.
  • Leading the development, review, and approval of pipeline mapping deliverables, including strip maps, alignment sheets, crossing drawings, permit drawings, land and right-of-way exhibits, construction typicals, hydrotest plan drawings, and related design packages.
  • Performing advanced pipeline mapping and corridor design utilizing Autodesk Civil 3D as the primary design platform.
  • Applying GIS and geospatial technologies to support routing studies, project development, stakeholder engagement, and project execution.
  • Supporting proposal development, project planning, scope definition, and execution strategy activities.
  • Evaluating scope changes and advising project leadership on potential impacts to constructability, schedule, budget, and project risk.
  • Coordinating with customers, survey teams, engineers, environmental specialists, land groups, and construction teams to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Facilitating route reviews, design workshops, customer meetings, and construction coordination sessions.
  • Presenting technical recommendations, routing alternatives, and pipeline mapping solutions to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Leading, reviewing, and approving work produced by junior designers while promoting technical excellence, quality, and continuous professional development.
  • Supporting schedule development, workload planning, and cost management objectives within assigned projects.
  • Participating in field activities to support route validation, data collection, constructability reviews, and verification of completed work.
  • Championing Worley’s Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality culture across all project activities.
  • Balancing leadership responsibilities on major capital programs while supporting multiple studies and projects as required.
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of mapping standards, workflows, digital tools, and best practices throughout the organization.

What you’ll bring to the role

  • Minimum 12 years of experience supporting pipeline mapping and design projects within upstream, midstream, gathering, transmission, or distribution systems.
  • Advanced proficiency with Autodesk Civil 3D (2018 or newer) in a pipeline design environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of ArcGIS, geospatial databases, mapping systems, and digital geospatial workflows.
  • Experience utilizing Skyline and Microsoft Access is considered an asset.
  • Strong understanding of survey data acquisition, interpretation, processing, and integration into engineering design deliverables.
  • Knowledge of route selection, pipeline development, right-of-way planning, and permitting requirements.
  • Working knowledge of civil grading and drainage principles is considered an advantage.
  • Experience supporting gathering systems and upstream pipeline projects is beneficial.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical work within complex project environments while balancing quality, schedule, and budget objectives.
  • Strong analytical thinking, technical problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively engage customers, project teams, and leadership.
  • Proven ability to mentor less experienced designers and foster collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and multiple project commitments.
  • A proactive, adaptable, and solutions-oriented approach supported by a high level of accountability and ownership.

Compensation for Colorado applicants:

  • Salary Range is $150,492 - $220,135
  • Benefits: Feel the energy at Worley with access to a range of benefits including: paid-time off, holiday pay (usually 8 per year in the US), and eligibility to participate in the medical, life, dental, and vision insurance plans, as well as 401K plan.
