Job Description

We are not looking for somebody to keep the function running as it does today.

We are looking for somebody who helps build the Non-Financial Risk function of tomorrow.

As technology, data and artificial intelligence reshape banking, the role of Non-Financial Risk is changing as well. Future success will depend not only on technical expertise, but also on the ability to set clear priorities, use data effectively, develop people, improve ways of working and keep pace with developments inside and outside the bank.

Reporting directly to the CRO, you will help shape the future direction of the Non-Financial Risk function, combining deep IT Risk expertise with the ability to create focus, develop people, drive change and prepare the function for an increasingly data-driven and AI-enabled future.

The role covers both IT Risk and Operational Risk. Both are part of your scope and attention. We are, however, specifically looking for somebody with a strong IT Risk background. Given BMG's technology-dependent operating model, specialised application landscape and increasing focus on data and AI, IT Risk expertise is a critical foundation for success in this position, while Operational Risk experience remains an essential part of the role.

The team

You will work with a small team of experienced Operational and IT Risk professionals. This is a true player-coach role: helping shape priorities, strengthen capabilities and improve the way the team operates, while personally contributing to some of the most complex IT and Operational Risk topics within BMG.

BMG operates in a specialised, technology-dependent environment, with global clients, unique cash and liquidity management products and a largely BMG-specific application landscape.

What you will do

Shape and strengthen the function

  • Help determine where the team should focus its time and attention.
  • Translate developments in technology, AI, regulation and BMG's strategy into clear priorities.
  • Coordinate activities across Operational Risk and IT Risk and ensure a consistent approach.
  • Improve ways of working, reporting and collaboration across the team.
  • Strengthen the connection with ING NFR, IT Risk and specialist communities.
  • Help prepare the function for future developments in technology, data and AI.

Develop people and capabilities

  • Coach colleagues on complex cases and support their professional development.
  • Help strengthen technical, analytical and stakeholder-management skills within the team.
  • Encourage ownership, accountability and knowledge sharing.
  • Build the future capabilities needed in an increasingly data-driven and technology-driven risk environment.

Contribute as a senior IT Risk and Operational Risk professional

You are expected to remain close to the content.

You will:

  • Assess and challenge complex IT Risk and Operational Risk matters.
  • Form independent views on material risk issues and advise the CRO accordingly.
  • Challenge control effectiveness, remediation plans and risk acceptance decisions.
  • Review major technology, operational resilience and change initiatives.
  • Translate technical and operational weaknesses into business impact and management actions.
  • Contribute directly to governance discussions, risk opinions and management reporting.
  • Bring specialist judgement to difficult decisions where there is no straightforward answer.

While the role covers both Operational Risk and IT Risk, we expect your deepest expertise to be in IT Risk and Technology Risk, enabling you to challenge effectively on topics such as cybersecurity, resilience, technology change, cloud, outsourcing, data risk and AI-related risks.

Drive more data-driven risk management

  • Improve the quality and usefulness of management information.
  • Strengthen dashboards, risk reporting and analytical insight.
  • Help the team move from opinion-based discussions towards fact-based decision-making.
  • Identify practical applications of analytics, automation and AI.
  • Challenge reporting that produces information but not decisions.

How to succeed

We hire smart people like you for your potential. Our biggest expectation is that you’ll stay curious. Keep learning. Take on responsibility. In return, we’ll back you to develop into an even more awesome version of yourself

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in IT Risk, Technology Risk, Information Risk or Non-Financial Risk within banking or another highly regulated environment.
  • Strong expertise in IT Risk and Technology Risk.
  • Experience with Operational Risk, Operational Resilience and broader Non-Financial Risk topics.
  • Experience influencing senior stakeholders and governance forums.
  • Experience improving how teams, functions or organisations operate.
  • Experience coaching and developing professionals.
  • Strong understanding of how technology risks translate into business risks.

Personal profile

We are looking for somebody who:

  • Creates focus and clarity when priorities compete.
  • Enjoys helping others grow and develop.
  • Combines strategic thinking with strong execution.
  • Is comfortable challenging constructively.
  • Has a practical, can-do mindset.
  • Continuously looks for opportunities to improve.
  • Is curious about technology, data and AI.
  • Combines strong technical judgement with strong people skills.

What success looks like

You will be successful when:

  • The team focuses on the topics that matter most.
  • Colleagues continue to grow in expertise and effectiveness.
  • Complex IT and Operational Risks are translated into clear business decisions.
  • Reporting becomes more insightful and data-driven.
  • Data, analytics and AI become practical tools within the team's daily work.
  • BMG benefits more effectively from the expertise available across ING.
  • The NFR function continues to evolve while maintaining strong and credible second-line oversight.

What BMG offers you

BMG combines the complexity and regulatory expectations of an international bank with the agility and visibility of a specialist organisation.

You will work directly with senior decision-makers and have the opportunity to influence the direction of the Non-Financial Risk function. Unlike many larger organisations, you will be able to see the impact of your contribution and help shape how the function develops.

At the same time, you will benefit from BMG's position within ING, providing access to broader expertise, specialist communities, development opportunities and leading practices across the wider organisation.

This role offers a rare combination of:

  • Complex and meaningful IT and Operational Risk challenges.
  • Direct exposure to senior management and strategic decisions.
  • The opportunity to shape a function rather than inherit one.
  • The ability to combine expert content with people development and organisational improvement.
  • A front-row seat in the evolution of risk management in an increasingly technology-driven and AI-enabled banking environment.
