About the Opportunity

We are looking for a Principal Hydrogeologist who will bridge the gap between complex data collection and practical engineering solutions for energy and environmental projects.

We operate under flexible working arrangements, with a mixture of office-based and home working environments. It is intended that the role will be in Harwell, Oxfordshire based, although alternative locations may be considered.

You will be working within a multidisciplinary team with specialities in low strength sedimentary rock, high strength rock and Quaternary geology, and in disciplines ranging from hydrogeology, land quality, geotechnical engineering, engineering geology and geophysics. Much of the work we undertake involves siting, site characterisation, site descriptive models and understanding subsurface conditions related to nuclear facilities. In addition, you will be encouraged to work with the wider Amentum community to further strengthen the team’s capabilities. You will also gain experience in complex bid preparation, project management and technical planning. As a result, we are looking for people who have the passion and drive to be involved with major radioactive waste management and nuclear decommissioning projects with strong adaptability, prioritisation and teamworking skills.

Whilst much of our work is focussed on radioactive waste management and disposal, there will be opportunities to become involved in exciting projects that form part of Amentum wider portfolio of work, particularly across the Energy, Environment and Defence business. We would be interested in candidates with experience in carbon capture and storage (CCS) and geothermal energy, which could compliment future growth opportunities.

There are significant expectations over the next thirty years concerning the siting of facilities for new nuclear builds, the need for geological disposal of wastes, as well as continuing geoscience characterisation at existing licensed sites to support on-going operations. This role, within an expanding team, will support our strategic positioning in the energy and environment sector and support delivery of current and future projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver expert technical support and advise on a broad range of hydrogeological and geological services, across the UK and international projects.
  • Contribute to all stages of project delivery, from bid preparation through to delivery.
  • Prepare and have oversight of technical reports relating to hydrogeology and wider geoscience/site investigation projects
  • Provide expert advice on conceptual models and support with numerical hydrogeological modelling. The team currently has a strong numerical modelling capability for hydrogeology. The candidate will work alongside the modelling team to help deliver integrated solutions.
  • Design site investigations and provide technical oversight to contractors and field teams.

Here's What You'll Need

  • Education: A degree in Geology, Environmental Science, Hydrogeology (MSc preferred).
  • Experience in a commercial engineering or environmental environment.
  • Excellent technical report writing and communication skills and proven experience undertaking groundwater assessment projects.
  • A strong understanding of UK hydrogeology and regulatory framework for water management
  • Ability to manage time and priorities while working on several varied projects.
