We are seeking a highly accomplished and driven Principal Engineer to join our advanced, multidisciplinary design organization. This role is a key technical leadership position responsible for the creation and maturation of new‑to‑the‑world technologies and highly differentiated products within the medical device industry, following AE’s Technology Development Process.

Engineering in Cork is focused on the development of next‑generation electrosurgical generator platforms, including pulsed electric field (PEF) technologies, ablation therapies, and other advanced surgical energy applications. The role also spans exploration and development of high‑efficiency power conversion architectures for advanced medical and industrial applications.

The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise in power electronics, RF systems, or closely related domains, combined with strong experience in product development, verification, manufacturing readiness, and technical leadership. This individual will foster innovation, provide strategic technical direction, and guide highly skilled engineers to deliver breakthrough solutions on schedule and within budget.

Essential Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership & Team Development

  • Own and drive the development of new‑to‑world technologies for defined target markets.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and inspiration to a multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • Develop engineering talent through coaching, structured feedback, and technical growth planning.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, accountability, and technical excellence.
  • Influence and contribute to global technology strategy and roadmap development.

Research, Innovation & Technology Strategy:

  • Lead and contribute to the conceptualization and development of advanced electrosurgical generators and related energy‑delivery technologies.
  • Explore and assess emerging technologies in power electronics, RF systems, surgical energy delivery, and high‑efficiency power conversion.
  • Translate research concepts into practical prototypes, demonstrators, and future product platforms.
  • Clearly articulate technical concepts, trade‑offs, and rationale behind development strategies to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.

Product & System Design Excellence:

  • Lead the design, analysis, and validation of complex systems, subsystems, and circuits to meet performance, cost, schedule, quality, and reliability targets.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex issues related to design performance, field reliability, manufacturability, and test yield; implement effective corrective actions.
  • Assume accountability for overall system performance in customer applications.
  • Drive adherence to AE’s Product Development Process, including design controls and Engineering Change Order (ECO) procedures.
  • Partner with Product Development Engineering to assess technology readiness and transition innovations into product development.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross‑functional teams including NPI, manufacturing, supply chain, quality, regulatory, program management, finance, safety, and production.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory, quality, and safety standards for medical devices.
  • Serve as a technical authority in power electronics architecture, control strategies, system integration, and surgical energy delivery.
  • Drive rigorous, data‑based problem solving across complex and ambiguous engineering challenges.


Work Environment:

  • Location: Cork – on site
  • Works in a standard office environment
  • Domestic and International travel of up to 10%
  • Regular interaction with internal and external stakeholders across multiple functional areas

Technical and Professional Skills:

  • Demonstrated track record of delivering innovative prototypes and commercialized products.
  • Strong capability to influence, negotiate, and align stakeholders in complex technical environments.
  • Deep expertise in power conversion topologies, high‑frequency switching, and control systems.
  • Experience with electrosurgical systems, pulsed electric fields, or ablation technologies is highly desirable.
  • Exceptional analytical skills and ability to solve highly complex problems independently.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple initiatives and balance short‑term execution with long‑term strategy.
  • Strong coaching, mentoring, and people‑leadership capabilities.
  • Strategic mindset with a passion for innovation and technology exploration.
  • Highly organized, disciplined, and execution‑focused.
  • Collaborative team player with strong interpersonal skills.

Experience/Education:
Essential:

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering or related discipline. Master’s degree or PhD inn electrical engineering, power electronics, or related field stongly preferred.
  • Minimum 8+ years in advanced design and development roles, ideally within medical devices or other high‑reliability systems.
  • Clear progression of increasing technical responsibility, including demonstrated intellectual property (IP) creation and technical leadership.
