Job Description

We are Hollis, a dynamic and forward-thinking multidisciplinary consultancy delivering solutions across the entire property lifecycle. As our Building Safety & Fire team continues to grow across the UK, we are looking for an experienced Principal Fire Engineer to play a leading role in the continued development of our London & South East team.

This is an opportunity to join a growing and ambitious service at a pivotal stage in its development. Working closely with our existing Building Safety & Fire specialists, you will lead the delivery of complex projects, provide trusted technical advice to clients and regulators, and help shape the future direction of our fire engineering offering.

At Hollis, we don't operate in silos. Instead, you will collaborate closely with colleagues across Building Surveying, Project Management, M&E Engineering, Building Forensics, Building Safety, H&S/CDM and other disciplines to deliver integrated solutions throughout the property lifecycle.

As a Principal Fire Engineer, you will be recognised as a technical authority, trusted client advisor and mentor to developing engineers, helping to maintain the high standards that underpin our reputation in the market.

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee the delivery of complex fire engineering and building safety commissions across a diverse range of sectors including commercial, residential, healthcare and mixed-use developments.

  • Provide expert technical advice and professional judgement on matters including:

  • Fire Safety Strategies

  • Fire Risk Appraisals of External Walls (FRAEW)

  • PAS 9980 assessments

  • EWS1 assessments

  • Planning Gateway and Building Safety Act requirements

  • Safety Case Reviews and Reports

  • Construction stage fire risk management

  • Fire and Emergency Files

  • Compartmentation, fire door and fire stopping surveys

  • Technical due diligence and lender advisory services

  • Third-party design and compliance reviews

  • Take ownership of technically challenging, high-risk and multi-stakeholder projects from proposal stage through to completion.

  • Travel across the region and as required to undertake surveys, inspections and site visits

  • Review technical reports, strategies and assessments, ensuring quality, consistency and compliance across the service.

  • Apply and interpret evolving regulatory requirements including the Building Safety Act, Gateway processes and wider fire safety legislation.

  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, acting as a trusted advisor and key point of contact.

  • Support fee proposals, project scoping and commercial management of projects.

  • Contribute to the growth and development of the Building Safety & Fire service through business development activities, client engagement and identification of new opportunities.

  • Mentor and support developing Fire Engineers and Surveyors, sharing technical knowledge and helping build capability across the team.

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across Hollis to deliver interdisciplinary solutions and maximise value for our clients.

Your Profile

  • Significant experience in Fire Engineering, Fire Safety or Building Safety consultancy.

  • Degree qualified in Fire Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering or a related discipline.

  • Strong technical knowledge across a broad range of fire engineering and building safety services.

  • Demonstrable experience leading the delivery of complex projects and managing multiple stakeholders.

  • Strong understanding of current legislation, guidance and industry standards, including the Building Safety Act, PAS 9980, FRAEW methodology and UK Building Regulations.

  • Experience reviewing and signing off technical outputs and providing technical leadership to project teams.

  • Experience mentoring or developing junior engineers and supporting professional development within a team environment.

  • Commercially aware, with experience supporting fee proposals, managing client relationships and contributing to business growth.

  • Chartered status, or working towards Chartered status with a clear pathway to achievement, would be advantageous.

  • Passionate about advancing standards within the fire engineering profession and helping establish Hollis as a leading building safety and fire consultancy.

Our preference is to recruit directly wherever possible. Should this role be approved for support from external recruitment partners, we will contact our PSL agencies accordingly.

Please note that we do not accept unsolicited CVs from agencies. Effective introduction of a candidate will only be accepted if it has been requested to submit CV’s in relation to a specific vacancy. Any speculative submissions will not incur a fee. For any queries, kindly reach out to the appropriate Talent Acquisition team member.
